ACHTERGROND - Op de dag dat Nederland het leenstelsel invoert, lanceert Obama een plan in zijn State of the Union om een deel van het onderwijs weer gratis te maken:
By the end of this decade, two in three job openings will require some higher education. Two in three. And yet, we still live in a country where too many bright, striving Americans are priced out of the education they need. It’s not fair to them, and it’s not smart for our future.
That’s why I am sending this Congress a bold new plan to lower the cost of community college — to zero.
Opmerkelijk is dat hij geen verschil maakt in leeftijdscategorieën:
Forty percent of our college students choose community college. Some are young and starting out. Some are older and looking for a better job. Some are veterans and single parents trying to transition back into the job market. Whoever you are, this plan is your chance to graduate ready for the new economy, without a load of debt.
Nederland en de VS komen vanuit een heel andere situatie, en studeren zal in de VS voorlopig nog flink duurder zijn dan in Nederland. De excessen daarvan zijn te zien in de documentaire Ivory Tower. Daarin wordt gesteld dat universiteiten zover gaan om hun klanten tevreden te stellen, dat ze naast prachtige gebouwen ook een goed klimaat voor feesten scheppen. Het aantrekken van studenten uit andere staten is financieel aantrekkelijk, dus extra reden om een aantrekkelijk vestigingsklimaat te creëren.
