Quote van de Dag: Gandhi ook maar een mens

[qvdd] We begrepen dat we niet werden ingedeeld bij blanken, maar op hetzelfde niveau te worden geplaatst als inheemsen, dat was te veel. Kaffers zijn gewoonlijk onbeschaafd (...). Ze zijn lastig, erg vuil en ze leven als dieren. India is in rep en roer wegens de biografie van Gandhi van de Amerikaanse auteur Joseph Lelyveld, waarin niet alles wat Gandhi zegt en doet heilig is. Bovenstaande quote wordt toegeschreven aan Gandhi, toen hij gelijkberechting van Indiërs in Zuid-Afrika bepleitte.

India: Economische groei leidt niet tot volle magen

First riceIndia doet het goed. Economisch gezien. De economie is de laatste drie maanden van 2010 weer met 8,2% gegroeid t.o.v. dezelfde periode een jaar daarvoor. De groei gaat dermate hard, dat men over 10 jaar een fors tekort aan steenkool voorziet, simpelweg omdat de economie eigenlijk te hard groeit. De kolenproducenten kunnen de groeiende vraag naar kool niet bijbenen. Desalniettemin staat India thans op de vierde plaats in de wereldranglijst voor investeringen in duurzame energie. Het gaat goed met India. Of niet?

De economische groei van India leunde aanvankelijk sterk op de technologische sector, waaronder goedkope ICT. Eén van de belangrijkste motoren van de recente groeiende economie in India is thans na de financiële sector (11,2% groei over 2010) de agrarische sector (8,9%). Het frappante is echter dat deze groei op de agrarische markt niet ten goede komt aan het overgrote deel van de bevolking van India, waarvan 52% ironisch genoeg zelf werkzaam is in diezelfde landbouwsector. Wetenschappers van Harvard en de University of Michigan hebben geconcludeerd dat ondervoeding onder kinderen niet minder is geworden. Met name in de deelstaten Bihar, Madhya Pradesh en Uttar Pradesh is de situatie nog altijd schrijnend. Er is geen correlatie geconstateerd tussen economische groei en afname van ondervoeding. Duidelijk is in ieder geval dat slechts de ‘happy few’ lijken te profiteren van de groei.

Indian discrimination

When you regularly travel in India with a mixed group – both Indian(s) and foreigner(s), you’ll discover that the tourist branch is not always prepared for this. My very first hostel in India, Broadlands in Chennai in 2008, was notorious for not allowing Indian guests to stay there. It had even been mentioned in earlier editions of the Lonely Planet, I discovered later and the local media kept reporting about it.

At the same time, a guest house in the same area, where my then colleague and friend, now boyfriend was staying, did not allow foreigners. They said that this required a police licence which they did not have.

Later I learnt that neither this guest house nor Broadlands are exceptions in India. Indian writers have mentioned it about other hotels in tourist destinations and I myself have encountered such hotels by travelling together with an Indian. They don’t always admit it – they would just all of a sudden say that they have no rooms, even if they were confirmed over email beforehand.

Just today, I called a hotel in Goa and after confirming availability and price, the receptionist told me that they don’t allow foreigners in this hotel. I guess foreigners in Goa might have a bad reputation for drugs and bikini’s, but still, isn’t this called discrimination? When I called the Tourism Department to report about it, all they said is that I should stay in one of their government hotels. Total indifference to my complaint.

Lodi Garden

Lodi GardenIn a recent article in one of India’s daily newspapers, Aravind Adiga (who wrote the Booker price winning novel The White Tiger), recalls how he once took an auto rickshaw to Lodi Gardens in New Delhi. When he arrived, the driver asked him if he would buy him a ticket for the garden, as he thought it looked so beautiful. The writer, surprised, explained to him that no ticket is required. The beautiful gardens are free for anyone to enter. But when he got out, he noticed the rickshaw driver driving away. Apparently he did not feel comfortable to go in.

The story seemed plausible enough to me, as I’d heard something similar not too long ago from a friend of mine. She had befriended her office’s driver and had great troubles thinking of places to meet him after work. He would not go to bars, cafe’s, restaurants, etc especially not with a girl. “What about Lodi Gardens?” I had asked. Its nice, free, public, and I thought, for everyone. But not for drivers, she had to explain to me. Not because there is a sign ‘forbidden for drivers’, but because he himself felt its not the kind of place he should go.

Hypocrisie in de internationale economie

Deed je het nog niet, begin er dan nu mee. Een beschimpende schaterlach voor iedere keer dat je een westers politicus China de les hoort lezen over de vrije markt.

In de film Manufacturing Consent zegt Noam Chomsky: “There is no more morality in world affairs, fundamentally, then there was at the time of Genghis Khan. [There’s] just different factors to be concerned [with].”

Aan die opmerking moest ik denken toen ik onlangs een analyse van Hans Moleman in de Volkskrant las. Moleman beschrijft de spanningen tussen China, India, en alle landen daaromheen. (Het stuk is hier te lezen voor abonnees.) In het slot verwoordt een Indiase analist één van de irritaties die de VS regelmatig richting China uiten: dat ze wel doen alsof ze een vrijemarkteconomie hebben, maar eigenlijk vals spelen!

De aanklacht luidt als volgt: China schaadt de economische belangen van andere landen omdat het de Yuan kunstmatig laag houdt. Een goedkope Yuan zorgt ervoor dat Chinese producten goedkoop zijn in het buitenland. Zo lang China de Yuan laag houdt, kan niemand met de Chinese bodemprijzen concurreren. China verdient aan export, Europa en de VS blijven beteuterd achter met enorme handelstekorten. Dit alles is oneerlijk en slecht voor de wereldeconomie.

Sex, Religion and no Politics

Just a small selection of jokes from a night of Indian stand-up comedians in Delhi. I could not understand all the jokes, but enjoyed the loud laughter and interaction of the audience and in the end, I did learn a bit more about stereotypes of different groups, casts and religions within India. People in Mumbai more polite than in Delhi, people in Calcutta more up for protest, West-Bengalis sticking together a lot, Tamils very religious, Jats very macho…

Tot het eind van de Koude Oorlog heeft de BVD de CPN in de gaten gehouden. Maar de dienst deed veel meer dan spioneren. Op basis van nieuw archiefmateriaal van de AIVD laat dit boek zien hoe de geheime dienst in de jaren vijftig en zestig het communisme in Nederland probeerde te ondermijnen. De BVD zette tot tweemaal toe personeel en financiële middelen in voor een concurrerende communistische partij. BVD-agenten hielpen actief mee met geld inzamelen voor de verkiezingscampagne. De regering liet deze operaties oogluikend toe. Het parlement wist van niets.

Euthanasia in Bollywood

Ten years ago the Netherlands, as the first country in the world, passed a law legalising euthanasia. Since then, not many countries have followed, as I learnt from this article on Radio Netherlands Worldwide. Coincidentally, the Bollywood movie Guzaarish, which deals with the subject, was released this week.

The tagline ‘fall back in love with life’ promised a cheesy ending in which the main character changes his mind and wants to live anyway, but nothing of that kind happened. It is actually not a bad film, visually beautiful and with solid characters and acting. It shows how a patient, the people who love him, the society and court of law think about and deal with euthanasia, without ridiculing the subject with bad music and dancing.

The movie has had positive responses in India, too.

It showed me that, whether you are in a country like my own, where euthanasia is legalised, or in a country like India, where its not – life, death, difficult choices around them and the emotions that come from them are universal. It confirms that I’m not from a country with wicked, perverted values and that are thoughts and feelings are actually not that different from the ones in other countries. And its encouraging to see that the people in India are open to discuss the subject, even if its through a Bollywood film.

The case against Arundhati Roy

Arundhati RoyA case hase been filed against Arundhati Roy – a writer/activist who in the Netherlands is most known from her novel The God of Small Things. The reason: in October she spoke at a conference in Delhi on Kashmir titled “Azadi [freedom], the only way”, together with Kashmiri separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani and a few others.

The charges include, I quote: “sedition; promoting enmity between classes; imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration; insult intended to provoke breach of peace; and false statement, rumour circulated with intent to cause mutiny or offence against public peace – all of which have to be read with Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act of 1967.” With the case being registered, Roy now faces arrest and if convicted, the maximum punishment is life imprisonment.

Earlier, after seeking political opinion, the Union Home Ministry had decided not to file a case against Roy and the others, but the police registered a case anyway this week after certain individuals filed complaints.
