A focus on criticism and formal dimensions of utterings seems rampant in our society. When looking for ways to address pressing issues, this exacerbates these issues . What is needed is (i) clear thinking, followed by (ii) a dialogue with peers, aimed at improving on –ways towards- intended outcomes, resulting in (iii) effective action. Some ideas that might offer relief:

Our comfort zone is built upon energy. Most of it comes from fossils. Tinkering with energy, is inviting disruptions.

When big oil speaks about our energy future, paying attention is called for.

Interesting to note that the commercial domain speaks so eloquently and at the same time detached, about our future. Which includes theirs.

A case is made for cities to take the lead. Not national governments, NGO’s, individual people, nor actors in the commercial domain.

This case is interestingly synchronistic, now electric vehicles are positioned as harbingers of an all electric society. Where there’s abundant electricity, mobility and water for all.

When we would take the effort to make this idea happen by telling our city governors to realize their crucial role, we would be acting truly effectively in serving our comfort zone.

Tot het eind van de Koude Oorlog heeft de BVD de CPN in de gaten gehouden. Maar de dienst deed veel meer dan spioneren. Op basis van nieuw archiefmateriaal van de AIVD laat dit boek zien hoe de geheime dienst in de jaren vijftig en zestig het communisme in Nederland probeerde te ondermijnen. De BVD zette tot tweemaal toe personeel en financiële middelen in voor een concurrerende communistische partij. BVD-agenten hielpen actief mee met geld inzamelen voor de verkiezingscampagne. De regering liet deze operaties oogluikend toe. Het parlement wist van niets.

Some suggestions regarding tackling common institutional barriers in a transition towards a sustainable energy regime. And thus boost resilience

1. allow people to hop on a bike and interact with people in other regions. This can be accomplished by finding ways to support people with aspirations in this directions. An example is paying them for writing post cards to people you think would appreciate receiving such mail. In this case my friends in their turn support a school in Nepal. To me a recumbent are the preferred way of traveling, due to an inclination towards laziness.

2. If staying home is preferred: insource part time best of class, seasoned, transition thinker
a. sign a formal agreement with regime actors (CEO, CFO, COO, CDO)
b. built trust
c. develop new criteria for success
d. use head, heart and hands
e. connect short with long term, micro with macro
f. frappez toujours
g. develop an in group language
h. synchronize with world at large and keep the hype of the day at bay
i. have inspiring deliverables
j. make the process joyful and in sync with the results sought / allowed

Confrontations between good and bad are of all ages. Hero’s need them. Although since post modernism this is a matter of perspective, to me some images are hard to look away from.

To me quite a number look like pieces of a jig saw puzzle. A 4D one. I like to assume that a larger picture regarding pressing current issues could be of interest. We all have pictures like this, ranging from implicit to explicit. Sharing them could help us survive.

The following pieces offered could be of interest in deblurring our minds intellectually and otherwise. An invitation into meaning, if you like.

1. The picture, or perhaps more aptly: icon, of Frankenstein shows an important ingredient in our current iteration of lessons to be learned. It shows the mixed blessing of technology: a significant increase in standard of living for many, which has become an unguided missile, threatening all. At the same time it offers tremendous opportunities, when used properly. 2. Part of this unguidedness are our attempts to address our sense of lack. The more fruits of technology we can afford and –ever briefly- enjoy, the more we are confronted with the inadequacy of what we have achieved vis a vis what we set out for: the Good life. This results in boredom, killing time, seeking new thrills. 3. To round up for now:

In de rijke historie van Sargasso – een van de oudste blogs van Nederland – vind je onder meer de introductie van het liveblog in Nederland, het munten van de term reaguurder, het op de kaart zetten van datajournalistiek, de strijd voor meer transparantie in het openbaar bestuur (getuige de vele Wob-procedures die Sargasso gevoerd heeft) en de jaarlijkse uitreiking van de Gouden Hockeystick voor de klimaatontkenner van het jaar.

“I would not give a fig for the simplicity this side of complexity, but I would give my life for the simplicity on the other side of complexity.” [Judge Oliver Wendell Holmes] In an effort of adding something worth while to any discourse, I experience myself as being saturated in perspectives.

With anything I read, think, write there are always endless perspectives present. I can bring them to the fore of my consciousness, or leave them. Interweave them with perspectives of others or with perspectives I used to have, could have, should have, or should not have. My choice. Or is it?

Post modernism can be seen as coming in 2 flavors:

– Critical. All perspectives (especially the so called ‘grand narratives’, with claims for meaning and truth), are interchangeable, reality is an arbitrary construction / illusion. So let the world run down like the second law of thermodynamics predicts and sleep it off till then. The reader is invited to explore how current policies fit in this model (without explicitly wanting or knowing so, but effectively bringing it about nevertheless) – Affirmative. This states that the predicament we’re in as a world now is due to the fact that our narratives weren’t ‘

Bedrieglijk echt gaat over papyrologie en dan vooral over de wedloop tussen wetenschappers en vervalsers. De aanleiding tot het schrijven van het boekje is het Evangelie van de Vrouw van Jezus, dat opdook in het najaar van 2012 en waarvan al na drie weken vaststond dat het een vervalsing was. Ik heb toen aangegeven dat het vreemd was dat de onderzoekster, toen eenmaal duidelijk was dat deze tekst met geen mogelijkheid antiek kon zijn, beweerde dat het lab uitsluitsel kon geven.

Trots op mossel vist in troebel water

Eind februari oordeelde de Raad van State dat het ministerie voor landbouw, natuur en voedselkwaliteit de mosselvissers in 2006 onterecht een vergunning verleende en legde een verbod op om mosselzaad uit de Waddenzee op te vissen (Trouw). Natuurorganisaties blij, mosselvissers woest.

Nu trekt er waas misplaatst nationalisme op boven de Waddenzee. Na ongezouten kritiek van het VVD-Kamerlid Ineke Dezentjé-Hamming op de Postcodeloterij dat deze organisatie met haar financiële steun aan de Waddenvereniging en de Vogelbescherming indirect de Zeeuwse mosseleconomie kapot zou maken komen de eerste boze burgerinitiatieven van de grond. Het Meisje Van de Slijterij (blogger) zegt haar twee loten -waarmee ze al jaren meespeelt in de Postcodeloterij- per direct op en claimt het domein: Trotsopdemossel.nl. In een poll in het AD is ongeveer de helft het eens met de oproep van parlementariër Dezentjé-Hamming tot boycot van de populaire loterij. Dat belooft nog wat…

Maar hoe terecht is het om maatschappelijke belangenorganisaties hun financiering te ontzeggen zodra ze toevallig een onwelgevallig geluid laten horen? In het geval van de mosselzaadwinning ligt de waarheid ergens in het midden en wordt het belang van ons poldermodel maar weer eens onderstreept!

De Evaluatie Schelpdiervisserijbeleid (EVA II) heeft aangetoond dat ongereguleerde mosselzaadwinning in de jaren ’90 bijna de mosselbanken op droogvallende platen heeft doen verdwijnen met een grote afname van de vogelstand tot gevolg. Maar stelt tevens dat duurzame mosselzaadwinning mogelijk is. “Duurzame bescherming van de Waddenzee is te realiseren door het stopzetten van de mechanische kokkelvisserij en het handhaven van mosselzaadvisserij in (een tweederde deel van) het sublitoraal in combinatie met het ontwikkelen van nieuwe mosselzaadvang-technieken” (bron). Een helder pad naar een duurzaam beheer van de Waddenzee en een gezonde Zeeuwse mosselsector, tóch?!

Native PerspectivesSpreadsheet style thinking adds comfort. Silly, but still.

Ones tribe (family, neighborhood, organization, faculty, hobby or life style club) reconfirms ones functional fit and that plasters over most inconveniences.

Unfortunately, society on any level is chaotic. For any phenomenon there, including sustainability and resilience, only an aqal approach makes it fruitfully addressable. Anything less results in dead ends. Also in the Netherlands.

And since, for example, Sachs doesn’t seem take into current power arrangements, his approach will run aground on bau.
