ACHTERGROND - Adam Curtis, de maker van ideeënhistorische documentaires als The Century of the Self (2002) en The Power of Nightmares (2004) neemt lezers van zijn blog mee langs een aantal koloniale conflicten in de 20e eeuw tussen islamisten in Afrika en grootmachten als Groot-Britannië, Frankrijk en Italië.
Curtis’ conclusie: de strijd die we bijvoorbeeld Frankrijk in Mali zien voeren tegen ‘islamisten’ is een herhaling van zetten, die Westerse grootmachten al zo vaak hebben uitgeprobeerd. Het is ‘history repeating’ en het resultaat was al die vorige keren ook al contraproductief, zo niet desastreus. En het wordt gelegitimeerd op basis van gemakzuchtige etiketteringen en een simplistisch wereldbeeld van ‘goeden’ versus ‘schurken’.

It means the western elites are helping to promote a failed revolutionary movement while ignoring the signs of what might be the future for Africa – the new systems of multi-party democracy being built from the grassroots in places like Somaliland. Without aid, and without the west imposing centralised forms of control.
