Goud & Geld

In Amerika is de waarde van geld altijd onderdeel geweest van politiek debat. Nu recent zijn er voorstellen om terug te keren naar de goud standaard. In een debat bij het satirische nieuwsprogramma ‘The Colbert Report‘ verdedigde Ron Paul, het meest libertarische lid van de House of Representatives, de herintroductie van goud als geld.

De discussie over de basis van geld is een lang lopende in de Verenigde Staten: geruime tijd ging de discussie over de vraag of de waarde van de dollar gebaseerd moet zijn op goud, zilver of beide. Er werd uiteindelijk voor goud gekozen: decennialang kon je altijd een dollar in wisselen voor een vaste hoeveelheid goud. In 1971 schafte de Republikeinse president Nixon de relatie tussen de waarde van goud en de waarde van de dollar af en werd de dollar een vrij bewegende munt. De reden was dat de Verenigde Staten niet genoeg goud meer in voorraad had om de vraag naar goud aan te kunnen, op het moment dat het vertrouwen in de Amerikaanse economie af nam. Sindsdien is de dollar een vrije munt waarvan de waarde wordt bepaald door het monetaire beleid van de Federal Reserve. Het is geld gebaseerd op vertrouwen waar geen echte harde waarde tegenover staat.

Volgens Paul is dit een probleem. Hij geeft in het debat vier argumenten om een goud-gebaseerde munt weer in te voeren: ten eerste heeft geld gebaseerd op goud het altijd langer vol gehouden dan geld dat zo’n basis ontbeert; ten tweede kan je altijd als je de overheid niet vertrouwt terugkeren naar goud; ten derde zou je liever goud honderd jaar in een sok bewaren dan papiergeld, omdat het ‘echte’ waarde heeft; en ten vierde zou goud de inflatie beperken.

Abolitio nominis

Als schrijver van stukken en stukjes over de actualiteit van Latijnse uitdrukkingen bedank ik het Nederlands Republikeins Genootschap (NRG), want het bezorgt mij een aanleiding om het Latijnse begrip abolitio nominis te gebruiken.

Het NRG wil, dat de naam van wijlen prins Bernhard verwijderd wordt uit het straatbeeld. Iemand met de echte en vermeende fouten van Bernhard “verdient het niet” dat er straten naar hem worden genoemd.

Dit verwijderen van iemands naam is een ritueel van extreme vijandschap. Sinds oude tijden wordt het beoefend door machthebbers en rebellen die het gebruiken om zelf machthebber te worden.

De Romeinen, de sprekers van het Latijn, waren meesters in het uitwissen van namen. Zij “verdienen” dan ook, dat deze praktijk met een Latijnse term wordt aangeduid: abolitio nominis – afschaffing van iemands naam. Er zijn nog opschriften op Romeinse ruïnes die de sporen ervan dragen, dat er een naam is weggewerkt. Het is voor het NRG hopelijk niet ontmoedigend, dat het vaak goed bekend is wiens naam er op deze manier voor eeuwig aan de vergetelheid is prijsgegeven.

Later, toen Rome allang ten onder was gegaan maar het Latijn nog steeds de taal van de geleerden was, ging men deze naamsvernietiging damnatio memoriae noemen (letterlijk: veroordeling van de herinnering).

Jawel, u moest er even op wachten, maar hier is dan toch nog de uitslag van onze verkiezing van de niet-top2000-muziek-top2000.
Nee, het zijn er dus geen 2000 geworden. Nog wel meer dan 1200, wat ook een goede prestatie is.
De lijst mag dan niet zo lang zijn geworden al het roemruchte broertje, hij is er niet minder indrukwekkend om. De diversiteit aan nummers is overweldigend. Zelf ben ik ook nog wel even bezig om het een en ander na te luisteren. Kijk vooral bij de reacties van de oorspronkelijke post voor linkjes naar clips.

En mocht u toch nog foutjes tegenkomen (bv nummers die toch in de top2000 staan of die dubbel voorkomen), laat het even weten. Passen we de lijst gewoon aan.

Boekrecensie | Niet genoeg grondstoffen voor hernieuwbare energie

Een grootschalige introductie van hernieuwbare energie en elektrische auto’s botst op een fundamenteel bezwaar: een tekort aan energie en andere grondstoffen om de gewenste infrastructuur uit te bouwen.

André Diederen, onderzoeker aan het Nederlandse TNO, sloopt in zijn zopas verschenen boek “Global Resource Depletion” de heilige huisjes van de ecotech-optimisten. Maar hij geeft ook hoop.

Er is vandaag de dag geen gebrek aan ambitieuze plannen die onze op fossiele brandstoffen draaiende maatschappij moeten omvormen naar een volledige op hernieuwbare energie gebaseerde wereld: zeeën vol windturbines, woestijnen vol zonnecentrales, continentale of zelfs wereldwijde elektriciteitsnetwerken om die duurzaam opgewekte energie te bufferen, een volledige overschakeling naar elektrische auto’s, enzovoort. Ook het scenario in het eind vorige week uitgegeven boekje van de TUDelft over de Nederlandse energievoorziening in 2050 (het document staat online) lijkt zo uit een science-fiction film te komen. Ingenieurs hebben alle vertrouwen in de toekomst, zoveel is duidelijk.

Iedereen blij

Dit soort plannen maakt iedereen blij, omdat ze de belofte inhouden dat we ons modern westers consumptiepatroon (dat zich intussen als een olievlek over alle culturen verspreidt) kunnen blijven voortzetten. Een verandering van levenswijze is in dit toekomstbeeld niet nodig, want technologie lost alles wel op. En als we mensen naar de maan kunnen schieten, dan moet het toch ook mogelijk zijn om al onze energie uit hernieuwbare bronnen te halen? Alleen al de zon stuurt elk uur meer energie naar het aardoppervlak dan de mensheid op een heel jaar tijd verbruikt. En dan is er nog het potentieel van wind, getijden, golfslag, aardwarmte en biomassa.

Brighter Than A Thousand Suns (deel 2)

Vandaag precies 65 jaar geleden wierpen de Verenigde Staten op Nagasaki hun tweede atoombom af. Vorige week schreven we al over de geopolitieke en militair-strategische overwegingen die hieraan voorafgingen. Vandaag staan we stil bij de gevolgen van dit besluit voor de burgers van Hiroshima en Nagasaki. Hoe verging het hun?

Dokter Marcel Junod, hoofd van de Rode Kruis delegatie in het Verrre Oosten, kwam als eerste buitenlandse arts op 8 september 1945 in Hiroshima aan. Hij beschreef zijn ervaringen in Soixante ans après, Le désastre de Hiroshima. In zijn rapport aan het Rode Kruis schrijft hij:

The first signs of these effects were visible four miles or so from the bomb?s dropping point. The roofs looked denuded, as their tiles had been blown off by the blast. In places, the grass was bleached, as if dried; (…)
At three miles from the bomb’s epicentre, some houses had been flattened like cardboard. The roofs were completely caved in; the rafters stuck out all round. This was the familiar sight of cities destroyed by explosive bombs. At two and a half miles, there were only piles of beams and planks, but the stone houses seemed intact. At just over two miles from the town centre, all houses had been gutted by fire. All that remained was the outline of their foundations and heaps of rusty metal. This area looked like the towns of Tokyo, Osaka and Kobe, destroyed by incendiary bombs. At one mile or so everything had been torn apart, blasted and swept away as if by a supernatural power; houses and trees had disappeared.

1 augustus: Clustermunitieverdrag van kracht

Clustermunitie is onnauwkeurig en maakt veel burgerslachtoffers, vaak nog jaren na dato. Ruim tachtig landen tekenden het Clustermunitieverdrag, dat gisteren van kracht werd, nog niet. Waaronder de VS, Rusland en Israël, landen die clustermunitie produceren én gebruiken. Wanneer tekenen zij? En hoe werkt Nederland, dat het verdrag wel tekende, met hen samen?

Clustermunitie eist veel burgerslachtoffers

Clustermunitie bevat tientallen kleinere explosieven die in de lucht loslaten en daardoor over een groot gebied verspreid raken. Heel handig als je een landingsbaan wilt bombarderen, dan kun je een mooi tapijt leggen. Maar ook lastig, want je kunt moeilijk onderscheiden wat je wel en niet gaat raken. Clustermunitie is dan ook berucht vanwege haar onnauwkeurigheid.

Veel van die explosieven ontploffen bovendien niet, maar blijven onontploft liggen en vormen daarmee de facto één groot mijnenveld. Kinderen worden aangetrokken tot wat er ? mede door de vaak felle kleuren ? uitziet als speelgoed.

Zij behoren dan ook tot de grootste groep slachtoffers. Sowieso treffen de projectielen vooral burgers, namelijk in zo?n 98 procent van de gevallen. Zoals de Nederlandse cameraman Stan Storimans, die twee jaar geleden in de Georgische stad Gori de dood vond door een Russische clusterbom. Overigens gebruikte ook Georgië zelf in die strijd clusterbommen.

Thimon de Jong, vroegbejaarde cultuurcriticus

De titel ‘slechtste opinieartikel van de week’ gaat naar Thimon de Jong voor zijn stuk Wo sind denn die Superhits? Wo sind sie geblieben? uit het NRC Handelsblad van 25 mei.

Samengevat komt het betoog van De Jong erop neer dat door de afname van het belang van de radio en de opkomst van internet er geen evergreens meer zijn een bindend cultureel vormen. Op zich is daar een genuanceerde reactie op te geven, maar daar heb ik geen zin in. Ik houd het kort: De Jong lult uit zijn nek en ik ga dat met voorbeelden bewijzen.

“Er zijn deze eeuw geen evergreens meer bijgekomen die wereldwijd door jong en oud kunnen worden meegezongen, gefloten of geneuried.”

Oh nee?

“Een kleine zelftest: noem één internationale superhit van de afgelopen vijf jaar.”

Seven Nation Army is uit 2003, dus die mag niet. Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah, roma-roma- ma-ah welke zullen we dan eens nemen?

Uit het oogpunt van eerlijkheid kunnen we de grote concurrente van Lady G. voor popwereldheerschappij niet onvermeld laten:

“Wanneer heeft u iemand voor het laatst horen zeggen: ‘Ik kan dit nummer echt niet meer horen!’?”

Groene verf bovengemiddeld giftig

It’s Not Easy Being Green…. Groene organisaties kunnen maar beter geen groengekleurd drukwerk, t-shirts en gadgets produceren. Los van het feit dat papier dode bomen kost, t-shirts waterslurpende katoen en gadgets überhaupt overbodig zijn bevat groene verf de giftigste kleurstoffen. Het probleem is al eeuwenoud: uit het groene behang van Napoleon kwam arsenicum vrij. Het giftige pigment in het ‘Parijsgroen’ maakte de schilders Cézanne, Monet, en van Gogh kapot. Maar ook nu nog bevat groene verf zeer giftige stoffen. Pigment Groen 7 bijvoorbeeld, de meest gebruikte kleurstof om plastic en papier groen te kleuren, is organisch maar bevat chloor. Een andere populaire variant, Pigment Groen 36, bevat chloor en bromide, terwijl Pigment Groen 50 een echte cocktail is van kobalt, titanium, nikkel en zinkoxide. (bron: IPS) Volgens Cradle to Cradle goeroe Michael Braungart kunnen deze gifstoffen een problem opleveren bij de recycling van materiaal waarop ze worden aangebracht. Wie écht groen wil zijn verft in html op een op kernenergie aangedreven computer vol zeldzame metalen… It’s Not Easy Being Green….
