Een documentaire over economische ongelijkheid valt moeilijk te verkopen aan studiobazen en geldschieters. Daarover vertelde Jacob Kornbluth, de regisseur van Inequality for All, in een interview met The Guardian: 'It always sounded so dry, but then I'd tell people it's like An Inconvenient Truth for the economy and they'd go, Ah!' Inequality for All is een krachtige documentaire die duidelijk uitlegt hoe het kapitalisme in de Verenigde Staten de middenklasse in de kou zet en de superrijken nog rijker maakt. Tijdens de laatste bijeenkomst van Movies: Science & the City keek een bomvolle zaal gebiologeerd naar wat feitelijk een anderhalf uur durend college over rijk en arm was, gegeven door de ster uit de film, Robert Reich, professor Publiek Beleid (UC Berkeley) en voormalig minister van Arbeid. Daarna betrad prof. dr. Jan Luiten van Zanden (UU), een van Nederlands meest vooraanstaande historici die zich bezighoudt met economische geschiedenis, het podium. Want wordt de kloof tussen arm en rijk ook hier steeds groter, of valt het allemaal wel mee?
En dus blijft er steeds meer over voor de werkgevers.
De grote werkloosheid op het hoogtepunt van de Grote Recessie zorgde ervoor dat lage lonen the new normal werden. Met als gevolg dat jonge werknemers niet meer sparen en steeds meer schulden hebben.
Kortom: een fijne rem op de consumptie en verder economisch herstel.
Ik ben benieuwd hoe het er in dit opzicht in Nederland voorstaat…

Seconds later, a video shows an officer behind Garner grab him in a chokehold and pull him to the sidewalk, rolling him onto his stomach. The New York City Police Department prohibits chokeholds.
“I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe!” Garner said repeatedly, his cries muffled into the pavement.

When US President Barack Obama talks about the future, he foresees a thriving US economy fuelled to a large degree by vast amounts of natural gas pouring from domestic wells. “We have a supply of natural gas that can last America nearly 100 years,” he declared in his 2012 State of the Union address.
Obama’s statement reflects an optimism that has permeated the United States. It is all thanks to fracking — or hydraulic fracturing — which has made it possible to coax natural gas at a relatively low price out of the fine-grained rock known as shale. Around the country, terms such as ‘shale revolution’ and ‘energy abundance’ echo through corporate boardrooms.
Companies are betting big on forecasts of cheap, plentiful natural gas. Over the next 20 years, US industry and electricity producers are expected to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in new plants that rely on natural gas. And billions more dollars are pouring into the construction of export facilities that will enable the United States to ship liquefied natural gas to Europe, Asia and South America.
All of those investments are based on the expectation that US gas production will climb for decades, in line with the official forecasts by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Heel vreemd is dat natuurlijk niet. In de VS kan de politie je zonder consequenties doodschieten als je bijvoorbeeld in een rolstoel zit en je enige ‘wapen’ een balpen is.
En in de VS is het voornamelijk de zwarte gemeenschap die van de straffeloosheid heeft te lijden.
Nadat de staat Texas al eens een onschuldige executeerde, is het binnenkort de beurt aan iemand die ernstig geestesziek is.
Scott Panetti, een man met een lange geschiedenis van schizofrenie, schoot zijn voormalige schoonouders dood, verdedigde zichzelf tijdens zijn proces gekleed in een paars cowboypak en riep meer dan tweehonderd getuigen op waaronder John F. Kennedy de paus, Jezus Christus en ‘Sgt. Ranahan Iron Horse’, de hallucinatie die hem had opgedragen de moord uit te voeren.

President Barack Obama has asked his national security team for another review of the U.S. policy toward Syria after realizing that ISIS may not be defeated without a political transition in Syria and the removal of President Bashar al-Assad, senior U.S. officials and diplomats tell CNN.
The review is a tacit admission that the initial strategy of trying to confront ISIS first in Iraq and then take the group’s fighters on in Syria, without also focusing on the removal of al-Assad, was a miscalculation.

The seminars offered police officers some useful tips on seizing property from suspected criminals. Don’t bother with jewelry (too hard to dispose of) and computers (“everybody’s got one already”), the experts counseled. Do go after flat screen TVs, cash and cars. Especially nice cars.
In one seminar, captured on video in September, Harry S. Connelly Jr., the city attorney of Las Cruces, N.M., called them “little goodies.” And then Mr. Connelly described how officers in his jurisdiction could not wait to seize one man’s “exotic vehicle” outside a local bar.
“A guy drives up in a 2008 Mercedes, brand new,” he explained. “Just so beautiful, I mean, the cops were undercover and they were just like ‘Ahhhh.’ And he gets out and he’s just reeking of alcohol. And it’s like, ‘Oh, my goodness, we can hardly wait.’ ”
Mr. Connelly was talking about a practice known as civil asset forfeiture, which allows the government, without ever securing a conviction or even filing a criminal charge, to seize property suspected of having ties to crime. The practice, expanded during the war on drugs in the 1980s, has become a staple of law enforcement agencies because it helps finance their work. It is difficult to tell how much has been seized by state and local law enforcement, but under a Justice Department program, the value of assets seized has ballooned to $4.3 billion in the 2012 fiscal year from $407 million in 2001. Much of that money is shared with local police forces.
Nu de Republikeinen, dankzij hun recente verkiezingsoverwinning, beide huizen van het Amerikaanse Congres controleren, is het wel aardig om de rampzaligheid van dertig jaar conservatieve beleidsmaatregelen langs te lopen.

Bedrieglijk echt gaat over papyrologie en dan vooral over de wedloop tussen wetenschappers en vervalsers. De aanleiding tot het schrijven van het boekje is het Evangelie van de Vrouw van Jezus, dat opdook in het najaar van 2012 en waarvan al na drie weken vaststond dat het een vervalsing was. Ik heb toen aangegeven dat het vreemd was dat de onderzoekster, toen eenmaal duidelijk was dat deze tekst met geen mogelijkheid antiek kon zijn, beweerde dat het lab uitsluitsel kon geven.
