Selective use of science “as bad as racism”

UK’s Chief Scientific Adviser criticizes “journalists wilfully misusing science, distorting evidence by cherry-picking data that suits their view, giving bogus authority to people who misrepresent the absolute basics of science, and worse”

Government Chief Scientific Adviser John Beddington is stepping up the war on pseudoscience with a call to his fellow government scientists to be “grossly intolerant” if science is being misused by religious or political groups.

In closing remarks to an annual conference of around 300 scientific civil servants on 3 February, in London, Beddington said that selective use of science ought to be treated in the same way as racism and homophobia. “We are grossly intolerant, and properly so, of racism. We are grossly intolerant, and properly so, of people who [are] anti-homosexuality…. We are not—and I genuinely think we should think about how we do this—grossly intolerant of pseudo-science, the building up of what purports to be science by the cherry-picking of the facts and the failure to use scientific evidence and the failure to use scientific method,” he said.

Beddington said he intends to take this agenda forward with his fellow chief scientists and also with the research councils. “I really believe that… we need to recognise that this is a pernicious influence, it is an increasingly pernicious influence and we need to be thinking about how we can actually deal with it.

Er is wel degelijk een sociale kloof

Om uitspraken te doen over politieke participatie heb je meer nodig dan alleen de gegevens van het Nationaal Kiezersonderzoek. Volgens Mark Bovens en Anchrit Wille is er wel degelijk sprake van een kloof tussen hoger en lager opgeleiden. Die kloof is ook zichtbaar op het vlak van de politieke betrokkenheid.

>Onderstaand artikel is een antwoord op een eerdere reactie van Hakhverdian, Van der Burg en De Vries. Volgens Hakhverdian cs is de kloof tussen hoog- en laagopgeleiden juist kleiner geworden voor zover het politieke interesse betreft. Dit in tegenstelling tot wat Bovens en Wille eerder beweerden.

In het boek Diplomademocratie proberen we een aantal zaken te agenderen en te duiden: de dominantie van hoger opgeleiden in vrijwel elke politieke arena; een aantal spanningen tussen een professionele,  meritocratische invulling van politiek en democratie als lekenbestuur, zoals het risico van scheve politieke agenda’s en wantrouwen en cynisme bij lager opgeleiden; de opkomst van populistische partijen en van een nieuwe scheidslijn in het Nederlandse politieke landschap.

Wij zijn vooral geïnteresseerd in de consequenties van opleidingsverschillen in participatie in een reeks van politieke arena’s.Dat neemt niet weg dat een belangrijke empirische vraag is waar de door ons geschetste kloof tussen hoger en lager opgeleiden nu uit bestaat en of die is toegenomen of niet. Bij de beantwoording van die vraag is het verstandig om verschillende soorten opleidingskloven te onderscheiden en om de tijdbalk goed in de gaten te houden:

The EU’s new politics of movement

The freedom enjoyed by EU citizens to live and work in each others’ countries is a unique liberty. It is the basis around which European governments have tried to build a single border, a compensatory system of co-operation between police, judges and immigration officers and a common refugee policy. But hardening attitudes towards immigration in many countries and widening policy disagreements between governments and the EU’s institutions are exposing fault-lines in this structure. As the cracks threaten to widen over the coming months, policy-makers face some tricky dilemmas.

For a start, some EU governments are struggling with the very concept of the free movement. The Dutch government – prodded by far-right politician and coalition kingmaker Geert Wilders – recently announced that it wants to renegotiate the free movement directive. At first sight, the Dutch demand does not seem that outrageous: change the law to allow governments to deport EU nationals with criminal records back to their home countries. The problem is that any re-opening of the 2004 directive risks sparking a plethora of demands from France, Italy or Britain to restrict free movement in other ways. The law was also at the centre of last year’s spectacular row between the European Commission and France over arbitrary deportations of Roma. Poorer countries like Poland, Hungary or Romania would be livid, leading to a bitter split between east and west and, possibly, north and south.

Cohen is een koning, geen leider

Zondag 16 januari vindt onder de warme vleugels van PvdA-leider Job Cohen een manifestatie in Amsterdam plaats: Een nieuw jaar, een ander Nederland , niet toevallig bijna dezelfde titel als het initiatief van oudgedienden Leo Platvoet (GL), Adri Duivesteijn (PvdA) en Tiny Kox (SP). ‘We grijpen het nieuwe jaar aan om te laten zien dat een ander Nederland mogelijk is.’ Het grote probleem van Job Cohen (en de hele PvdA) is, dat het hele ‘Cohen-verhaal’ een bedeesde indruk maakt. Job Cohen is een koning, maar geen leider. Niet van een progressief kader, niet van de oppositie, niet van de PvdA. Het stemt mij droevig.

Ik was nog niet zo lang geleden verheugd toen Job Cohen aanstalten maakte om het land weer gestalte te geven na de jaren van de stuurloze, kleffe, behoudzieke Zeeuwse onderkoning Balkenende. Ik juichte zelfs. Nederland kon nu best eens Groot Amsterdam worden; Van Schiermonnikoog in de kop tot Mariadorp down there zouden we ons niet meer hoeven schamen, maar hadden we eindelijk een bedachtzaam en ruimdenkend potentieel staatshoofd.

Al snel werd duidelijk dat er één groot probleem was. Job Cohen wist zich als burgemeester omringd met souffleurs, jakhalzen en vossen: de leider hoefde maar even zijn oren links en rechts te luisteren leggen en hij wist weer een beetje meer. Zodra hij ‘naar buiten’ moest met zijn betoog (publiekelijk, in de media), waren de ergste kreukels al uit de lakens gestreken. En zoveel media-optredens waren er toch niet. Voor een burgemeester is dat niet zo’n issue: het gaat om besturen, vergaderingen bijwonen, de stad vertegenwoordigen. Als Amsterdam sliep, klikte Job Cohen tevreden zijn notarislamp, op het mahoniehouten kabinet in zijn ambtswoning, uit. Dat zou een Mark Rutte nooit lukken. Wij moeten zo’n betweter, achterneef van Wiegel, hier niet als burgemeester. En elke CDA’er zou door hoofdstedelingen de tent uit worden geblazen. Niet dat Cohen bij iedereen populair was, maar hij paste op de stad, zoals een koning op een met grachten omzoomd kasteel past. Zijn stadsdelen waren zijn kasteeltuinen.

Deranged Individuals and Seditious Movements

This timeline reveals how the “deranged man” hypothesis leads to faulty explanations based on individualization and protects white social movements from the scrutiny that non-white movements receive. The ideological context of this has been studied extensively by journalist David Neiwert.

This list is quite long and definitely establishes a pattern of political violence. But if every incident is treated as an individual act, taken in isolation, and explained by reference to individual characteristics of the perpetrator, then, the social, political and cultural background disappears, leaving the emerging social movement unexplained and unaccountable.

It is a common phenomenon, long studied and explained by social psychology that when individuals from our in-group or privileged individuals commit questionable acts, these acts are explained individually. When individuals from out-groups, or groups that are socially unpopular, commit questionable acts, these acts are explained as part of group membership, as categorical. The former are exceptions, the latter are representative. That is how racial and ethnic prejudice persist and how white privilege is preserved. One only has to imagine what media discourse would be, had the shooter been non-White, Latino or Muslim.

So, this timeline is one of white, domestic terrorism, fueled by seditious rhetoric from various media outlets and figures. The fact that the perpetrators are not part of a single organization does not change that fact. Social movements can exist without social movement organizations.

As for mental illness, it is the easy individual culprit, the one factor that, without further elaboration, explains everything. This is as if mental illness existed in a social and cultural vacuum, which it does not, of course. To invoke mental illness may explain outrageous behavior (i.e. behavior outside of the norms) but it does not explain the commission of specific acts (assassination attempt against a Democratic Congresswoman, that still remains to be explained). But to invoke mental illness provides some relief that we are not dealing with organized violence and that therefore, there is nothing socially and politically significant going on and no deep questioning to be had.

Participatory democracy in the EU?

europees verdragThe European Parliament approved last week the final deal on the European Citizens Initiative (ECI), which obliges the European Commission to consider proposals supported by the signatures of one million Europeans. The final deal is a compromise between the Commission and Council, who insisted on administrative hurdles that would have made it very difficult to collect the signatures needed, and MEPs who wanted fewer obstacles. But how much of a boost is this new instrument for democracy and citizens’ power?

The Citizens’ Initiative is presented as a tool to empower citizens. Such a tool is of course much-needed in a European Union that is suffering from a deep democratic deficit, and where citizens are largely sidelined in decision-making, contributing to a strong and deepening sense of political disempowerment. The vacuum that currently exists between citizens and the EU institutions is occupied by professional lobbyists, most of which represent big business interests. It is in this desperate context that the European Citizens’ Initiative is launched.

Introduced as a result of the Lisbon Treaty, the Citizens’ Initiative has even been referred to as a “tool for participatory democracy”. Wikipedia defines participatory democracy as processes that ensure “broad participation of constituents in the direction and operation of political systems” and create “opportunities for all members of a political group to make meaningful contributions to decision-making”.[1] Belgian Secretary of State for European Affairs Olivier Chastel, who negotiated for the Council during the EU Presidency, even claimed that “Thanks to the citizens’ initiative, we will change from representative democracy to participatory democracy!” [2]

Disinformers defend Foxgate email saying unequivocal warming of the climate should always be disputed

FoxNews is in opspraak door een uitgelekte email waarin de staf wordt verteld klimaatverandering altijd te ontkennen. Nu mengt het beruchte skeptici blog WattsUpWithThat zich de strijd, maar glijdt gelijk ook uit.

Fox News managing editor Bill Sammon was widely condemned yesterday for an email telling the network’s staff not to report on even the most widely accepted scientific facts without immediately challenging them, as I reported here.

The only ones defending Fox News are, predictably, the originators and repeaters of the very disinformation that FoxNews reporters are being ordered to repeat. The leading online disinformer, discredited former TV weatherman Anthony Watts of WattsUpWithThat, actually went so far as to fabricate phony claims about the email in order to defend Fox News.

Yesterday, he wrote (falsely) that it was a “stolen email” and “illegally obtained” –on the basis of no facts whatsoever. In fact, as MediaMatters explained to CP, “It was provided to us by a recipient.” I think that was pretty obvious from the story and from the email itself, which was clearly sent to a great many people in FoxNews. It would be hard to imagine that no one on the distribution list thought the email was journalistically inappropriate.

The end of marriage as an institution

“Some are divorced and disenchanted with marriage; others are young couples ideologically opposed to marriage, but eager to lighten their tax burdens. Many are lovers not quite ready for old-fashioned matrimony.

Whatever their reasons, and they vary widely, French couples are increasingly shunning traditional marriages and opting instead for civil unions, to the point that there are now two civil unions for every three marriages.

When France created its system of civil unions in 1999, it was heralded as a revolution in gay rights, a relationship almost like marriage, but not quite. No one, though, anticipated how many couples would make use of the new law. Nor was it predicted that by 2009, the overwhelming majority of civil unions would be between straight couples.

It remains unclear whether the idea of a civil union, called a pacte civil de solidarité, or PACS, has responded to a shift in social attitudes or caused one. But it has proved remarkably well suited to France and its particularities about marriage, divorce, religion and taxes — and it can be dissolved with just a registered letter.”

Stop fossiele elekticiteit binnen 20 jaar

Dit is een gastbijdrage van Remko Schuur die oproept tot het ondertekenen van een petitie. In deze petitie wordt gesteld dat we in Nederland binnen 20 jaar moeten stoppen met fossiele elektriciteit. Niet alleen vanwege een mogelijke klimaatverandering, maar ook om een toekomstige energiecrisis het hoofd te kunnen bieden.

Het vorige kabinet had ambitieuze doelstellingen voorgenomen voor CO2-reductie: 30 procent minder CO2-uitstoot in 2020 (ten opzichte van 1990) en 20 procent duurzame energie. Het nieuwe huidige kabinet heeft die doelstelling naar beneden bijgesteld naar 20% reductie in CO2-uitstoot en 14% duurzame energie. Echter, zonder daadkrachtige overheid zal het moeilijk zijn om zelfs die doelstelling te halen. Natuurlijk, we draaien tegenwoordig allemaal een spaarlampje in de fitting, we letten wat meer op of de stekkers ’s nachts uit het stopcontact liggen en we draaien de was op 30° in plaats van 60°. En het bedrijfsleven doet hier en daar ook zijn best om energie te besparen, maar zet dit nu echt zoden aan de dijk? Het blijven uiteindelijk kleine beetjes. Kan dat niet wat voortvarender? Even wat cijfers ter illustratie.

In 2009 is er in Nederland een onvoorstelbare 249 PJ (249 miljard MJ) netto aan elektriciteit geproduceerd. Om deze ontzagwekkende hoeveelheid energie te produceren is er in totaal voor 523 PJ aan fossiele brandstoffen verstookt, voornamelijk steenkool (226 PJ) en aardgas (297 PJ).

Sex, Religion and no Politics

Just a small selection of jokes from a night of Indian stand-up comedians in Delhi. I could not understand all the jokes, but enjoyed the loud laughter and interaction of the audience and in the end, I did learn a bit more about stereotypes of different groups, casts and religions within India. People in Mumbai more polite than in Delhi, people in Calcutta more up for protest, West-Bengalis sticking together a lot, Tamils very religious, Jats very macho…

Like This! Facebook volgt iedereen

like this buttonVoor Facebook is kennis over het wel en wee van 500 miljoen gebruikers niet genoeg. Hij verzamelt ook graag privé-informatie over niet-gebruikers. Volgens Arnold Roosendaal, onderzoeker aan het Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology and Society, volgt Facebook in potentie iedere internetter via zijn relatief nieuwe social media button: Like This!

In een recent gepubliceerd white paper schrijft hij het volgende:

,,Numerous websites have implemented the Facebook Like button to let Facebook members share their interests, therewith promoting websites or news items. However the tool is also used to place cookies on the user’s computer, regardless whether a user actually uses the button when visiting a website. As an alternative business model this allows Facebook to track and trace users and to process their data.

It appears that non-Facebook members can also be traced via the Like button. This means that Facebook‟s tentacles reach far beyond their own platform and members. Due to the extensive web coverage with Like buttons, Facebook has a potential connection with all web users. Web activity can be linked to individual accounts or a separate data set can be created for individuals who are not (yet) a Facebook member.

The hidden collection of data on browsing behavior and the creation of individual data sets has implications for the privacy of individuals. This article discusses privacy issues arising from third party cookie use and connectivity of web activity and devices, using the technical process behind the Facebook Like button as an example.”

Palmolie plannen Nederlandse industrie schieten tekort

Dit is een gastbijdrage van Suzanne Kröger, campagneleider bossen Greenpeace. Ze is in Jakarta aanwezig op de RSPO meeting voor duurzame palmolie. Zij constateert twee ontwikkelingen. Ten eerste de Maleisische en Indonesische industrie gooien hun gewicht in de schaal om de RSPO standaard omlaag te trekken. Ze willen af van het principe dat je eerst je concessie moet onderzoeken op waardevolle stukken bos voordat je kapt. De hele essentie van de RSPO. Ten tweede de RSPO wil graag de duurzaamheidsstandaard zijn voor de biobrandstoffen richtlijn van de EU voor palmolie. Alleen neemt de RSPO broeikasgasuitstoot helemaal niet mee in de duurzaamheidscriteria.

Gisteren is in Jakarta de jaarvergadering van de ronde tafel voor duurzame palmolie (RSPO) gestart. Dit omstreden keurmerk blijkt in praktijk niet de grootschalige kap van bossen voor de aanleg van palmolie plantages tegen te gaan. Maar de Nederlandse industrie zet vol in op de RSPO: vorige week presenteerden ze hun ambitieuze plannen om vanaf 2015 alleen nog RSPO palmolie in hun producten te gebruiken aan staatssecretaris Bleker (EL& I). Het woord ambitieus is hierop nauwelijks van toepassing. Het is “too little, too late”.

De aanleg van palmolie plantages alleen al in Indonesië en Maleisië kost 170 voetbalvelden tropisch bos per uur. De Sumatraanse tijger en orang-oetans verliezen hun leefgebied en worden met uitsterven bedreigd. De lokale bevolking wordt ervoor van hun land verdreven. Sinar Mas, het grootste palmolie bedrijf van Indonesië, is wereldwijd berucht om zijn illegale kap en het verwoesten van orang-oetan leefgebied. Het uitsluiten van dit soort bedrijven, die zonder enige scrupules te werk gaan, zou de kern van het plan moeten zijn, in plaats van te langzaam inzetten op een te vrijblijvend certificeringssysteem.
