How capitalism killed the notion of career

boekomslag corrosion of characterThis is not a new idea coming from Richard Sennett. He already wrote about that very topic in The Corrosion of Character. Like many other analysts, Sennett notes that Obama made a significant mistake when he did not make job creation and reducing precarization a priority of his administration (the interview was conducted before the 2010 election) because he has no sense of the realities of everyday life of so many Americans.

For Sennett, the United States is a country that is socially very vulnerable not only because of precarization but also because of greater individualization. Strikes and social movements such as those seen in France over the past few weeks are unimaginable in the US. Americans tend to consider survival in individual terms (or, I would add, just limited to their family). I think this triumph of ideological individualism is the major victory of the right because it frames every issue. After all, as Denis Colombi – marshalling Polanyi – reminds us, the market exercises a hold not just on material relations but also on minds.

If I were Durkheimian, I would add that this low level of social solidarity explains the fact that the US is a society that more interpersonally and structurally violent than other rich countries.

Or they can use that magnifying glass to light ants on fire, and then perhaps host a week of shows on the sudden, unexpected, dangerous flaming ant epidemic. If we amplify everything, we hear nothing.

There are terrorists and racists and stalinists and theocrats, but those titles must earned; you must have the resume. Not being able to be able to distinguish between real racists and Tea Party-ers, or real bigots and Juan Williams or Rick Sanchez is an insult, not only to those people, but to the racists themselves, who have put in the exhausting effort it takes to hate. Just as the inability to distinguish terrorists from Muslims makes us less safe, not more. The press is our immune system. If it overreacts to everything, we actually get sicker, and perhaps eczema.

Afgelopen zaterdag hielden Jon Stewart en Stephen Colbert een manifestatie waarin ze opriepen tot het tonen van gezond verstand. Ook in Nederland zou zoiets niet misstaan.

Hoe gebruikte je de stelling van Pythagoras ook al weer? Wanneer zijn gebeurtenissen ook al weer statistisch onafhankelijk? En hoe zat het in godsnaam ook al weer met afgeleides?

Wiskundige problemen oplossen heeft vaak toch een sterke link met de middelbare schooltijd. Hoewel altijd anders beweerd werd, gebruik je niet zo heel veel ingewikkelde wiskunde in het dagelijks bestaan. Toch kom je er niet altijd onderuit: soms zijn er momenten dat je voor een probleem komt te staan waarvan je weet dat je het op je zeventiende makkelijk opgelost zou kunnen hebben, maar nu… En wat zou je dan graag je oude wiskundeleraar naast je willen hebben staan die geduldig uitlegt hoe je integralen berekent en kansen bij elkaar optelt.

Gelukkig hebben we Salman Khan die ervoor zorgt dat die oude wiskundeleraar nu niet meer terug hoeft te komen van zijn pensioen. Khan, een Amerikaans wiskundige, besloot de wiskunde-bijles video’s die hij maakte voor zijn neefje op Youtube te zetten. De populariteit van de filmpjes steeg al snel dusdanig dat hij in 2009 zijn baan opzegde en zich fulltime bezig ging houden met zijn website: KhanAcademy.org.

The sociology of powerpoint presentations

For Franck Frommer, Powerpoint (and the ubiquitous Powerpoint presentation) is a reflection of the way we think and process knowledge and the sociological dynamics that underlie these changes.

In this interview with Le Monde, he describes these dynamics. First off, Powerpoint has become hegemonic in that it is used by over 500 million people worldwide and has a quasi-monopoly over presentation software. It is also a skill everyone is expected to have. Anything, any type of content is expected to be turned into a Powerpoint presentation (”just do a Powerpoint!”).

In the 1980s – 1990s, Word was the hegemonic software. But we have switched from word processing and written text to esthetic and bulleted content with its own codes, grammar and rhetoric.

Part of the triumph of ppt is the fact that the price of entry is really low and that it is possible, without much training to play around with it, with easy multimedia integration, transitions, etc. Finding the worst Powerpoint presentations is a fun Internet meme (see here) that makes fun of the amateurs who go overboard with features. At the same time, for Frommer, Powerpoint emerged on the market at the same time that businesses were undergoing transformations to flatten hierarchies and engage in management by projects. Collaboration and transversality became the name of the game and worker’s creativity became the buzzword. Which meant, organizationally, more meetings to discuss with a wider range of people, hence the need for a simple common language.

Refuting myths about immigration and the environment

Immigrants are integral to driving clean energy innovation. They accounted for 70 percent of men and women who entered the engineering and science fields from 1995 to 2006 and 40 percent of all high-tech venture-backed companies.

CAP’s Jorge Madrid has a new report, “From a ‘Green Farce’ to a Green Future.” Here’s his summary:
Combating climate change and reforming our broken immigration system are two of the greatest challenges facing Congress and the Obama administration. Legislation to address these issues has come up short thus far. Both have been fiercely debated throughout the country and many Americans demand solutions.In the midst of these debates anti-immigrant groups are revamping their efforts to play these issues against each other using misinformation. These voices have long argued that immigrants destroy the environment, accelerate climate change, and undermine U.S. efforts to transition to a clean and green future.

Nativist organizations and hate groups are attempting to drive their political agenda using environmental concerns as a cover. And conservative lawmakers and opponents of clean energy and climate legislation who use phony environmental arguments as a political wedge are promoting these groups’ talking points.These arguments are a “green farce.” They’re supposedly presented out of concern for the environment but are intentionally misleading and dangerously misinformed. They present Americans with a false choice between achieving fair and humane immigration reform and climate legislation that will respect the environment and lead our country to a clean and prosperous energy future.

Euro reform: north versus south

eurosEuropeans agree that the management of the euro must be improved to prevent future crises, or deal with them better if and when they happen. The European Commission is hopeful that it can get all 27 EU countries to agree on a package of reforms it published at the end of September. However, recent conversations in various EU capitals left me with the impression that divisions still run deep on crucial aspects of eurozone reform. Not everyone shares the Germans’ sense of urgency, and there is a risk that complacency sets in before a sustainable new framework has been created.

On September 29th, the European Commission published six draft laws designed to improve the management of the euro. The package foresees earlier and tougher sanctions on countries that break agreed limits on budget deficits and debt levels, new procedures for macro-economic co-ordination to avoid harmful imbalances among EU countries, and a harmonisation of the way EU countries draw up their budgets. The conclusions of Herman Van Rompuy’s taskforce on eurozone governance are expected to go broadly in the same direction. The Commission hopes that the proposed reforms can become law by the summer of 2011 – an ambitious timetable even by the Commission’s own admission.

Meehuilen met de digitale wolven

demonstratie tegen IsraelIn de tijd van sociale media  is zo’n beetje iedereen bij De Goede Zaak betrokken. Maar dat maakt nog niet iedereen tot een activist. De Amerikaanse journalist Malcolm Gladwell heeft deze week in de New Yorker weer een pareltje afgeleverd. In Small Change: why the revolution will not be tweeted, veegt hij de vloer aan met het idee dat moderne revoluties en grote sociale veranderingen veroorzaakt worden door de opkomst van sociale media.

Zijn redenering is als volgt: Ja, mensen zijn meer betrokken bij gewichtige issues en nemen daar kennis van, maar dat betekent nog niet dat mensen ook daadwerkelijk bereid zijn zich in te zetten voor een goede zaak. Sociale media knopen veel mensen aan elkaar, maar doen dat in zwakke, decentrale verbanden. Als je hoort dat een vage twittervriend in het ziekenhuis ligt, ga je daar niet iedere dag met een bos bloemen langs.

Grote sociale veranderingen vereisen veel meer inzet. En vereisen vaak het nemen van grote risico’s. Dat doe je niet voor een twitter- of facebookvriend. Je neemt alleen grote risico’s als je een grote persoonlijke betrokkenheid hebt bij een zaak. En vaak betekent dat sterke persoonlijke banden met slachtoffers of gedupeerden, of dat je er zelf een bent.

Immigration: why Brussels will be blamed

Now asylum if you're gayLiberal Sweden elects an explicitly anti-immigrant party to parliament for the first time. France’s president and the European Commission lacerate each other in public over deportations of Roma. A former German central banker publishes a bestseller warning that immigration is diluting the nation’s human stock. And even Britain moves forward with plans to cap economic immigration. The last three weeks have been a startling illustration of how immigration has come to dominate European politics.

At first, the EU seemed only a marginal player in this drama. The European Commission cannot dictate how many immigrants member countries let in, how many refugees they accept or how host societies should integrate newcomers. EU powers over the issuing of work visas are limited. But, as the row between President Sarkozy and Viviane Reding, the EU’s justice commissioner, demonstrates, the Union has become a central player in immigration policy, even when governments point to public safety to defend their actions. This is mainly because the Commission is legally obliged to protect the mobility rights of citizens under a ‘free movement’ directive agreed by governments in 2004. (The law aims to make sure that EU nationals can move to each others’ countries without the need for work or residency permits, a commitment originally laid down in the EU’s founding treaties.)

A message you can’t tuna out

Okay, the pun stinks. But what’s even more foul is what we are doing to our oceans through unsustainable fisheries. This ad from WWF South Africa, is a graphic representation of “bycatch”, which is the sea life killed and wasted by some commercial fishing techniques:

Copy: Only a tenth of the catch in long line tuna fishing is actually tuna. Most commercial fishing gear is not completely selective. As a result many endangered sea animals are also captured. To ensure the fish you buy is caught in a way that is environmentally friendly, text our fishms number (079 499 8795) with the type of fish and you’ll receive an sms back as to whether it’s in the red, orange or green category.

This ad is particularly timely for me, since my 5-year-old son has started telling off our neighbourhood fishmonger for selling monkfish.

Wilders en wij

‘Politiek is antwoord geven op de vraag wie bij ons hoort en wie bij hen.’ Dat schijnt de fascistische filosoof Carl Schmitt ooit gezegd te hebben. Ik behoor tot degenen die menen dat je een enkele uitspraak kunt onderschrijven, zonder iemands gehele filosofie te steunen. Daarom mag ik ook graag uiteenlopende denkers citeren als – ik noem er maar een paar – Friedrich Nietzsche, Johan Cruijff en Ronald Reagan. Zei ik denkers?

Ik vind het dus belangrijk om vast te stellen bij wie ik hoor. En bij wie vooral niet. Laat me nog één andere grote denker aanhalen. Marx, Groucho Marx wel te verstaan. Die sprak ooit de gedenkwaardige woorden: ‘Ik zou nooit lid worden van een club die iemand zoals ik als lid zou accepteren.’ Daarom zou ik ook zo graag lid worden van de PVV. Die accepteert helemaal geen leden, op de Grote Blonde Leider na dan.

Op de PVV ga ik ook niet snel stemmen, trouwens. Bij Wilders bekruipen mij dezelfde twijfels als destijds bij Fortuyn. Heeft hij nu echt zo’n monomane hekel aan moslims, of denkt hij hiermee een gat te hebben gevonden in de electorale markt? Het eerste zou hysterisch zijn, het tweede cynisch, de combinatie van beide schizofreen. Wat niet wil zeggen dat ik me bij het koor van mensen wil voegen die Wilders en zijn partij liever vandaag dan morgen nog In Therapie zouden willen sturen.

Constructieve oprotoptie voor stabiliteit?

Wat de uitkomst ook is op 9 juni: het volgende kabinet wordt een ‘moetje’. Geen prettig vooruitzicht, want er zijn urgente problemen. Economische crisis, klimaatcrisis, oprakende fossiele brandstoffen, exploderende zorgkosten zijn enkele van de problemen die ons land te wachten staan. Al deze problemen vereisen lange termijnoplossingen. Het ene moment stimuleert de overheid de installatie van zonnepanelen, de volgende minister maakt de aanschaf ingewikkeld. Wie bewaakt de grote lijnen? Iedere partij heeft in dit land zijn eigen stokpaardje. Gekozen burgemeester, boerkaverbod en de grootte van vissenkommen zijn reuze belangrijke issues. Maar welke politieke partij maakt zich nog druk om grote-mensen-problemen? Hoe krijgen we ooit een stabiele regering in dit land van kleine politieke partijtjes?

Konstruktiven Misstrauensvotum

Gerd Leers en anderen hebben een kiesdrempel voorgesteld. Oud idee en het lost weinig op. Kwamen de vorige kabinetscrises door kleine partijen als de SGP of de Dierenpartij? Nee, zeker niet. Daarbij komt: ook met een kiesdrempel kun je de val van een kabinet niet voorkomen. Het antwoord komt uit Duitsland. Onstabiliteit in de jaren ’20 bood Hitler de mogelijkheid om aan de macht te komen. Dat moest na ’45 beter. Om die reden voerden de Duitsers het ‘konstruktiven Misstrauensvotum’ in. Goed, het beestje moet in Nederland een andere naam krijgen, maar het principe is helder. Een regering zit de rit gewoon uit, behalve als een meerderheid van het parlement zich kan vinden in een goed alternatief. Ik verklap het maar al vast: die meerderheid is niet eenvoudig te vinden.
