“Omringd door gevaarlijke gekken”, kent u die uitdrukking?! Wie zelf wel eens bij rellen aanwezig is geweest kent dat vast wel. Bij demonstraties die uit de hand lopen zijn het bijna altijd afwijkende buitenstaanders die de eerste steen gooien: vechtersbazen en undercover agenten. Maar in Griekenland lijkt er meer aan de hand. De oorspronkelijke demonstranten zijn vervangen danwel aangevuld door andere groepen en onderling wordt er ook gevochten. Het protest lijkt net als bij de rellen in de franse banlieues ongericht en niet meer politiek gemotiveerd. En dat is jammer zou de echte revolutionair zeggen. Een Britse leraar engels in Noord-Griekenland ziet confrontaties tussen burgers. In Patra and Larissa angry citizens attacked protesters in the cities universities. Een Zweedse met een liefde voor de Griekse eilanden ziet toch de rijen gesloten tegen de regering. It is so sad and frustrating that the media continue to present the current political movement as a confrontation between anarchists (or extremists) and the police. What is happening in Athens is a continuation of the massive public unrest with the current Karamanlis government, and its unfair policies. I’m not learning anything, and when I get out of school, I don’t think there is any job for me. De relschopper blijkt een kind uit een welgestelde familie die van mening is dat het kapotslaan van winkelruiten de armen vooruit helpt.
Een Belgische internetondernemer ging een nachtje de straat op met demonstranten in Kreta. Here the protesters aren’t students. They’re just kids imitating what is going on in Athens, plus some adults from underprivileged social classes. I met one factory worker, for example, who had joined the protests just to try to steal stuff. (France24)
