Als je kijkt naar grote opiniepeilingen zie je dat vanaf het begin van de jaren ’80 structureel blijkt dat 40 tot 50 procent van de Nederlanders vindt dat er te veel ‘buitenlanders’, ‘allochtonen’ of ‘moslims’ zijn. Wilders vertolkt die stem. Hij zaait ook geen haat, hij oogst haat.

In the current campaign, Trump is behaving like a professional wrestler while Trump’s opponents are conducting the race like a boxing match. As the rest of the field measures up their next jab, Trump decks them over the head with a metal chair.

The rest of the Republican field is concerned with the rules and constructing a strategy that, under those rules, will lead to the nomination. But Trump isn’t concerned with those things. Instead, Trump is focused on each moment and arising the maximum amount of passion in that moment. His supporters love it.

The key to generating passion, Barthes notes, is to position yourself to deliver justice against evil forces by whatever means necessary. “Wrestlers know very well how to play up to the capacity for indignation of the public by presenting the very limit of the concept of Justice,” Barthes writes.

Trump knows how to define his opponent — China, “illegals,” hedge fund managers — and pledges to go after them with unbridled aggression. If, in making his case, he crosses over a line or two, all the better.

Toch zou ik Corbyn geen populist willen noemen. Ik denk dat dit het onbegrip versterkt en dat we Corbyn beter kunnen plaatsen binnen de ‘loony left’ waarmee Labour al veel langer te maken heeft. Dat is niet populistisch, maar studentikoos, anti-burgerlijk en politiek correct. Denk aan ‘red’ Ken Livingstone, die het tot burgemeester van Londen schopte, om Blair te pesten. Hij voerde tolpoorten voor de binnenstad in, geen volkse prioriteit, maar meer speelruimte voor de rijken en de radicale chic. Een communist als George Galloway was lang een horzel voor de Labourleiding. Met zijn anti-Israëlstandpunten en pro-moslimhouding doet hij het goed op universiteiten. Maar de Britse arbeidersklasse heeft er niks aan. Hetzelfde geldt voor Corbyn, pacifist én vriend van Hamas, Hezbollah en Poetin. Hij wil namens Labour excuus maken voor de Irakoorlog, de dood van Osama bin Laden noemde hij ‘een tragedie’.

There is a demographic lag at play here, but individualism will only dwindle from here on in. Political upheavals from Occupy to Corbymania, and the success of the SNP, all show how the millennial generation understand themselves using a fundamentally different model to those raised in the 20th century, and who still unconsciously use individualism as the basis of their thought. It may take a few more “inexplicable” political shocks before the Westminster consensus grasps what has happened, but the “historical throwbacks” are not those who support Jeremy Corbyn. It is those that are bewildered.

De oorlog in Syrie vonden Westerse politici natuurlijk vanaf het begin “heel erg”. Maar nu de EU zelf plotseling te maken krijgt met honderdduizenden, wellicht miljoenen, Syrische asielzoekers moet er plotseling iets gebeuren.

Veilige Gebieden inrichten in Syrie dus. De bedoeling ervan is dat Syriers in Syrie blijven en dus niet meer naar de omliggende landen (Turkije, Libanon of Jordanie) gaan omdat ze daarvandaan naar de EU trekken.

Maar Veilige Gebieden inrichten in Syrie is geen goed idee en zeker geen oplossing. Het is zelfs een gevaarlijk plan.

Eén reden waarom Donald Trump – die overigens dezelfde politieke ruimte, namelijk economisch links én nationalistisch/autoritair, heeft ontdekt als onze eigen PVV – het momenteel goed doet onder het Republikeinse electoraat in de VS is dat hij er een handje van heeft af te geven op ‘political correctness’.

De opkomst van Trump is dan ook eigenlijk te wijten aan de alles doordringende, verstikkende politieke correctheid van ‘links’ van de afgelopen jaren, menen sommige Amerikaanse conservatieven die The Donald liever kwijt dan rijk zijn:

Ik durf niet te zeggen of de menselijke invloed tot zo hoog in de atmosfeer reikt, Het zou ook kunnen dat het fenomeen bij steeds meer mensen bekend is doordat mensen foto’s ervan op internet delen. Dat mensen misschien meer opmerkzaam zijn moeten we niet verwarren met werkelijk vaker voorkomen.

Most English Muslims hail from poorer bits of Pakistan and Bangladesh, and often went into industries that have since faltered. In Scotland ethnic minorities sometimes benefit from “reverse discrimination”: as the National Health Service was the first employer to send minorities to some of Scotland’s farther-flung areas, it is often assumed that non-whites are doctors. Mohammad Sarwar, a Scot, was Britain’s first Muslim MP.

Years ago, I watched a heated anti-Muslim protest outside New York. Most of the attendees were clearly from out of town, and angry about the Muslims they’d never met but were sure were here to take their country. For two hours, they railed and hollered. Famished by their phobia, they made their way to the many food trucks parked on the opposite side of the street, most of which were run by Muslims, serving Sharia compliant food. It was almost too funny to be true. But the protesters didn’t know any better, the vendors were happy to turn a profit, and everybody left happy.

How can you not love this country?

Ik heb mezelf altijd als ruimdenkend beschouwd, verheven boven het onverholen racisme van veel Belgen. Tot mijn scha en schande moet ik bekennen dat ik almaar minder voldoe aan dat hooggestemde zelfbeeld.

Het zit in de kleine dingen, zo merk ik. Zoals mijn misplaatste vraag aan een zwarte serveuse in een Brussels café of zij misschien geen dancing kent waar ze hip-hop draaien. Alsof haar huidskleur betekent dat zij kennis heeft van het uit Afro-Amerika overgewaaide muziekgenre.

Natuurlijk zal u mij een lans horen breken voor gelijkberechtiging. Ik ben toch Afrika-journalist! Bij MO* dan nog! Wijd ik me niet professioneel aan een zo divers continent?

Mijn racisme zit echter veel dieper, het is onbestemder, ligt onderhuids.

Roedin, in Toergenjevs gelijknamige roman, wil zichzelf graag ‘volledig, gretig en totaal’ aan iets overgeven; hij eindigt dood op een Parijse barricade in 1848, nadat hij zichzelf heeft opgeofferd voor een zaak waar hij niet helemaal in geloofde. Het was echter Dostojevski die het scherpst zag hoe individuen, getraind om te geloven in een verheven notie van persoonlijke vrijheid en soevereiniteit, en vervolgens geconfronteerd met een werkelijkheid die dit soort verlangens meedogenloos afstrafte, uit de verlammende ambivalentie konden breken door zich over te geven aan gratuite moordpartijen en paranoïde opstandigheid.
