Een geheel andere ‘Reasons to be cheerful’ vandaag. Negenendertig redenen om vrolijk te zijn.
Ze werden al eens opgesomd in het welluidende vers dat Ian Dury in 1979 aanhief. We verluchtigen de tekst lukraak met wat kunst.
Summer, Buddy Holly, the working folly
In winters weer omgekomen: Buddy Holly. Voor het Buddy Holly Center staat zijn iconische bril, in een ontwerp van de ook reeds overleden kunstenaar Steve Teeters. Wij kijken hier naar een ontwerp van ene Michael Connor uit Clear lake, bij het stukje land waar het vliegtuig is neergestort waarin Buddy Holly en zijn collega’s zaten.
Good golly, Miss Molly and boats
Molly Crabapple, auteur en beeldend kunstenaar. Schrijft, tekent en schildert over Syrische vluchtelingen, Guantanamo gevangenen, Occupy Wall Street. Gebruikt kunst als wapen.

En ik vond leuk wat Pepijn Lanen (of welke van de drie was het?) van De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig in een interview in Volkskrants’ Sir Edmund van gisteren zei, Hij stond met zijn vriendin in de beeldentuin van het Kröller-Müller Museum bij de Needle Tower van Kenneth Snelson. Hij zegt dan:”Als je eronder staat lijkt het net alsof je in een gekke wiskundesom bent beland”.
Goeie tekst van Ian Dury. En nee, die Needle Tower zelf had er niks mee te maken.

@2: Nou met een beetje goede wil en fantasie had het bij het 10e vers kunnen horen (Take your mum to Paris …) want ook als je onder de Eifeltoren staat kun je je in een ‘gekke wiskundesom’ wanen, in de zin van “toen ik bij de naald stond moest ik aan de Eiffeltoren denken”, of zoiets..
