| OTTAWA – The House of Commons has passed a motion declaring a national climate emergency, and supporting Canada’s commitment to meet the Paris Agreement emissions targets.
Conservative MPs voted against the motion, but it still passed 186-63 with the support of the Liberals, New Democrats, Bloc Quebecois and Green MPs. The motion was was put forward by Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna. The motion describes climate change as a “real and urgent crisis, driven by human activity,” notes how it is impacting Canadians, and states the need to pursue clean growth methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. |
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his cabinet have again approved the Trans Mountain expansion project, a crucial next step for the much-delayed pipeline project designed to carry nearly a million barrels of oil from Alberta’s oilpatch to the B.C. coast each day.
The cabinet has affirmed the National Energy Board’s conclusion that, while the pipeline has the potential to damage the environment and marine life, it’s in the national interest and could contribute tens of billions of dollars to government coffers and create and sustain thousands of jobs. Beyond approving the project, Trudeau also committed to directing every single dollar the federal government earns from the pipeline — which, when it’s built, is estimated to be some $500 million a year in federal corporate tax revenue alone — to investments in unspecified clean energy projects. |
Het klimaat verpesten om geld te verdienen om het klimaat te redden dus… Nee, dat is handig.

Klimaatwet en noodtoestand vallen toch een beetje onder de categorie symboliek waar mensen hun goede bedoelingen weergeven. Een energietransitie kost nu eenmaal tijd en olie en gas hebben we nog steeds nodig. In Noorwegen rijden de mensen in hun Tesla naar hun werk. Veel van dat werk heeft met de olie en gaswinning te maken. Rome en Napels zijn ook niet in een dag gebouwd.
in Nederland kondigen we de ene week plechtig aan dat we de CO2 uitstoot gaan halveren en de andere week dat de luchtvaart dus eindelijk weer kan gaan groeien.
