Locals did not put up much of a fight to keep them out. The Sunni Dulaym tribe predominates in Fallujah, and they have not since 2003 felt that the Iraqi government truly represents them. They think it is a cat’s paw of Shiite Iran.

„Lügenpresse” voor de kwaliteitspers. ‘Altparteien’ voor de gevestigde politieke partijen, en ‘Volksverraders’ voor leidende politici – vele Duitsers bedienen zich inmiddels als vanzelfsprekend van deze begrippen.

Velen zijn zich echter niet bewust van de achtergrond ervan. Ze gaan namelijk terug op de zogenaamde ‘Neue Rechte’, een radikaal rechts-nationale beweging, die in de afgelopen jaren steeds verder aan sterkte gewonnen heeft.

Een blik op dit wereldje toont, hoe gelijksoortig de denkramen zijn – ze reiken van de omstreden SPD-man Thilo Sarrazin tot aan de opinieleider van het Nieuwe Rechts, Götz Kubitchek. Een blik op deze kring toont, hoe breed het neorechtse gedachtegoed in Duitsland onderhand verbreid is.

De ideeën van Nieuw Rechts – alsook haar jargon – zijn niet enkel bij Pegida-marsen alomtegenwoordig, maar ook in de publieke discussie, bij lezingen en voor alles op social media.

Ik wil geen pessimist zijn, ik ben dat in wezen ook niet. Maar ik kan me niet herinneren zo’n politieke meltdown te hebben meegemaakt, op zoveel verschillende plekken tegelijk. En dan heb ik het niet alleen over de VS en Rusland, maar ook over Polen, Frankrijk, Groot-Brittannië, in Nederland. Het is malaise alom.

Aan het woord is Washington Post-columniste Anne Applebaum, geinterviewed in Trouw. Ze zegt een aantal rake dingen over de huidige wereldpolitiek. Ze constateert dat het momenteel een diepgaande politieke malaise is met uiterst gevaarlijke personen aan de macht, of op het punt de macht te grijpen.

The post-Sykes-Picot order will be the result of fighting in the coming years between regional powers – first and foremost Iran and Saudi Arabia – and their religiously motivated auxiliaries, such as the Shia Hezbollah or the Sunni Islamic State. Any Western military intervention would only exacerbate the situation.

The era when a Western hegemon could maintain control of the Middle East, by military force if necessary, is over. Regional forces, not external powers (including Russia), will create the new order in the Middle East emerging out of the remains of the Sykes-Picot system. By the time proxy wars like the one in Syria have finished their work, the Sykes-Picot Agreement will be history.

Vrijheid van meningsuiting, satire en ordinair schelden zijn synoniemen geworden. En dat levert dan hoogstandjes op als: Erdogan is een jongenshoertje / geitenneuker / pedofiel. […]

Sinds Erdogan anderhalf jaar geleden aantrad als president, zou het Turkse Openbaar Ministerie al het duizelingwekkende aantal van 2000 mensen hebben aangeklaagd voor belediging. Dat zijn meerdere mensen per dag. Toch is deze man nergens in Europa zo populair onder Turken als in ons land. Dat geeft stof tot nadenken. Dat kan door grapjes te maken over de penis van Erdogan, het kan ook door er serieuzer en scherper over te debatteren.

Vergeef me mijn onpopulaire mening, maar ik heb het redelijk gehad met mensen die de vrijheid van meningsuiting misbruiken om te beledigen zonder doel. Dat is zonde. Het besmeurt namelijk een vrij essentieel onderdeel van een vrije democratie. Daarin moet je alles en iedereen kunnen bekritiseren, ook – nee, júíst – als dat pijn doet. Maar kritiek hebben is iets wezenlijks anders dan ordinair schelden zonder verder een punt te maken.

In different but dramatically unpredictable ways, Russia and China could be the geopolitical beneficiaries of such a development even as global order itself becomes the more immediate geopolitical casualty.

Last but not least, in such circumstances a divided and fearful Europe would see its current member states searching for patrons and competing with one another in alternative but separate arrangements among the more powerful trio.
