Nu alleen één berichtje van een door de Taliban tot de islam bekeerde Britse journaliste in een links internetblaadje.
Waarom is dat? Dat is omdat de voormalig minister-president van Maleisië, Mahathir Mohammed na zijn pensioen als hobby heeft opgepakt om allerlei conferenties te beleggen rond gewichtige kwesties. Zo heeft hij een conferentie belegd over het terugbrengen van het aantal nucleaire wapens in de wereld; een conferentie over hoe het conflict tussen Israël en Palestina te beslechten; etc.
In de echte wereld luistert niemand naar die man; maar hé, je mag je fantasieconferenties beleggen natuurlijk en daar de wereldproblemen even oplossen. Het zal zijn ijdelheid wel strelen ofzo.

Bijna nergens in het nieuws helaas. Toch gek, als ik krantenboer was had ik het met koeienletters op de voorpagina gezet … ongeacht of het van (groot) belang is of niet. Mensen smullen ervan als hun eigen (voor)oordelen bevestigd worden, en je wilt toch kranten verkopen.
Journalisten maken zichzelf graag wijs dat ze uitsluitend ‘objectief nieuws’ brengen, en omdat ze dit nieuws niet goed kunnen duiden, zijn ze bang dat het hier wel eens om ‘gekleurd nieuws’ zou kunnen gaan. Bang dat ze door hun collega’s van ongenuanceerde anti-Amerikaanse sentimenten worden beschuldigd, laten ze het dus maar liever … you are, immers, either with us or with the terrorists. En nieuwsselectie is kleur bekennen. Zoiets. Ik weet het niet.

Nu kunnen ze niet meer op vakantie naar Maleisië. Dat zal misdadigers in de toekomst afschrikken!
