Nasrallahs uitspraken over het wahabisme (en per extensie Saoedi-Arabië) kunnen overigens niet los worden gezien van een grote soennitische conferentie die eind augustus plaatsvond in de Tsjetsjeense stad Grozny.

Tot grote schrik van de Saoedi’s, werd hun specifieke vorm van de soennitische islam aangeduid als een ‘gevaarlijke deformatie’ van de ware leer. (En om de belediging nog wat groter te maken, werd het soefisme, wat volgens de Saoedi’s ‘verboden innovaties’ bevat, wél expliciet genoemd als behorende tot de soennitische mainstream.)

Dat woordgebruik geeft een aardige kijk op de redeneertrant onder liberalen. “Sociaal” draait er niet om dat kosten van de zorg zoveel mogelijk gespreid worden onder de zieken en de meer fortuinlijken. Het is juist sociaal als zieke mensen hun gezonde medemens wat meer ontzien bij de financiële gevolgen.
