Early man has a moment to reflect and he thinks to himself, ‘well, this is an interesting world that I find myself in’ and then he asks himself a very treacherous question, a question which is totally meaningless and fallacious, but only comes about because of the nature of the sort of person he is, the sort of person he has evolved into and the sort of person who has thrived because he thinks this particular way. Man the maker looks at his world and says ‘So who made this then?’ Who made this? – you can see why it’s a treacherous question. Early man thinks, ‘Well, because there’s only one sort of being I know about who makes things, whoever made all this must therefore be a much bigger, much more powerful and necessarily invisible, one of me and because I tend to be the strong one who does all the stuff, he’s probably male’. And so we have the idea of a god. Then, because when we make things we do it with the intention of doing something with them, early man asks himself , ‘If he made it, what did he make it for?’ Now the real trap springs, because early man is thinking, ‘This world fits me very well. Here are all these things that support me and feed me and look after me; yes, this world fits me nicely’ and he reaches the inescapable conclusion that whoever made it, made it for him.

Het stuk dat (nu) bovenaan die Cooltools-lijst prijkt is ook erg prettig -vooral voor sport(kijk)ers, Federer as Religious Experience, By DAVID FOSTER WALLACE (2006).

Gelukkig staan er nu ook artikelen van John McPhee bij — die lijst wordt telkens aangevuld met tips — maar ik mis er werk van David Remnick op. De beste lange politieke journalistiek die ik de laastste jaren las stond in zijn boek _Reporting_.
Tekenend overigens hoe het mij niet zou lukken een lijst met zelfs maar tien beste Nederlandse tijdschriftartikelen op te stellen.
@1 Gaat het nu over wat er geschreven wordt (waar ik het wel mee eens ben) of hoe het opgeschreven wordt? Ik vind die column wat dat betreft nogal meevallen. Dit (vanaf 1:55) is bij voorbeeld die bal van Federer die zo uitgebreid beschreven wordt, en volgens mij heb ik hem wel mooiere dingen zien doen.
@3 inderdaad. Al was er wel een hele goeie in -ik meen VN in 2007- over de ideologische achtergrond van Balkenende. Kuyper etc. Maakte een hoop duidelijk. En goed geschreven zonder Balkenende af te kraken.

Ja, de column/het essay van Wallace vind ik over het geheel ook lang niet even sterk. Wel de beschrijving van dat schoonheid niet het doel van de sport is, maar (bij voorkeur) daar wel in tot uiting komt. Wat je inderdaad voelt als je Federer op z’n best ziet. Of bij voetbal Dennis Bergkamp:

Sja als ik mijn lektop meesjouw op vakantie dan moet er vooral een interweb verbinding zijn in het hotel. Anders is het eigenlijk geen hotel.
Als zomerleesvoer zou ik niet alleen het in de post geciteerde essay van Adams aanraden, maar het hele boek waar dit essay in staat: The Salmon of Doubt. Heerlijk boek, met veel stof tot nadenken en ook wat entertainment voor de afwisseling.
Dat onderschrijf ik van ganser harte, Frank Quist. Staat vol met fictie en non-fictie die na zijn dood van Adams’ Macintosh is afgehaald. Voor fans van de HHGG ook een kort verhaaltje met Zaphod Beeblebrox:

When the hunt for new sources of energy had at one point got particularly frantic, one bright young chap suddenly spotted that one place which had never used up all its available energy was -the past.
