Violence against sex workers is a serious problem, both nationally and internationally, and Sarkeesian makes a good case that the games she discusses treat that violence as fun, enjoyable, or even laudable. But Sarkeesian’s videos have not garnered much praise from those most directly affected by these tropes. On the contrary, many sex workers have argued that Sarkeesian’s videos contribute to the objectification and stigma that she claims she is trying to reduce.

The Rhodesian and Apartheid South Africa solidarity from the US goes back to the rise of the new right in the late 70s and in particular the rise of Reagan and the onset of the ‘second’ or new Cold War in the 1980s. Apartheid South Africa was portrayed as an outpost of Western values and civilisation against a sea of communist blacks in Angola, Zimbabwe and Mozambique in particular.

Much money was channelled through libertarian and right-wing thinktanks and groups, by both the American government and the apartheid government, to fund a PR campaign aimed at creating sympathy for whites under siege in South Africa and those left in Rhodesia (soon, it was imagined, to become a communist dictatorship). In particular there was a focus on elevating Jonas Savimbi and Unita into anti-communist freedom fighters, and later the IFP as a moderate pro-capitalist alternative to the communist ANC.

Both phenomena, of blacks who chose to pass and of blacks who could but abstained, illustrate the porous reality of race, and more crucially, how it’s distinct from ethnicity. On one hand, “black” is a statement of identity. It describes a certain culture and a certain history, tied to the lives and experiences of enslaved Africans and their descendants. It’s a fluid culture, with room for a huge variety of people, from whites, to blacks, to people of Latin American and Caribbean descent.

On the other hand, however, it describes the bottom rung in the American racial hierarchy. It’s a construct, but it was built from physical features, as colonial Americans took Africans, made them slaves, and made them “black.”

We often think of online activism as a shallow bid for fleeting attention, but the movement that Mckesson is helping to lead has been able to sustain the country’s focus and reach millions of people. Among many black Americans, long accustomed to mistreatment or worse at the hands of the police, the past year has brought on an incalculable sense of anger and despair. For the nation as a whole, we have come to learn the names of the victims — Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Tony Robinson, Walter Scott, Freddie Gray — because the activists have linked their fates together in our minds, despite their separation by many weeks and thousands of miles.

In the process, the movement has managed to activate a sense of red alert around a chronic problem that, until now, has remained mostly invisible outside the communities that suffer from it.

Er is geen partij die op dit moment zo nadrukkelijk een nieuwe mens wil vormen als de VVD. Zij heeft een project geformuleerd waarin burgers geleerd wordt zelf verantwoordelijk te zijn voor alles, en tegenslag pas in laatste instantie als een zaak van de samenleving te zien.

Zelf beschikkend over tomeloze energie, is de premier het voorbeeld van deze burger. Hij hekelt dan ook de passiviteit van mensen die niet alles uit hun leven halen wat erin zit, en bij ontslag eerst de website van het UWV raadplegen alvorens een nieuwe baan te gaan zoeken. Vandaar dat de VVD een groot voorstander is van bemoeizorg en het te werk stellen van bijstandsgerechtigden, in de hoop een broodnodige mentaliteits-verandering in hen teweeg te brengen.

Wat mij stoort is dat iedereen altijd maar ‘hogerop’ wil’.

In een interview met De Volkskrant hekelt minister Jet Bussemaker de vanzelfsprekendheid waarmee  middelbare scholieren na hun eindexamen voor de hoogste vorm van vervolgonderwijs kiezen.

Dan hebben we ambitieuze jongeren, is het weer niet goed.

Het zal wel een tikfout zijn, maar het staat er echt: dank u voor uw ziekenhuis. Het Engels van minister-president Rutte is niet  zo beroerd. We hebben wel eens slechter gehoord. Hij zal ongetwijfeld de secretaris-generaal van de OESO in de juiste termen hebben bedankt voor de gastvrijheid.

Hoewel? De OESO maakte bekend dat de Nederlandse economie in 2015 met 2,0% zal groeien en in 2016 met 2,2%. Het kabinet baseert het huidige beleid op de laatste raming van het CPB: 1,7% in 2015 en 1,8% in 2016. Heeft Rutte nu de OESO bedankt voor wonderlijk herstel, voortkomend uit de intensive care afdeling van hospitaal Europa?

Uit de pilot van de VO-raad bleek dat veel docenten het plan ondersteunen en de manier hoe het nu gaat als een probleem zien.

Voldoende draagvlak voor de plannen volgens een woordvoerder van het ministerie van OCW. Ondanks dat een meerderheid van de Tweede Kamer tegen de invoering was van het omdraaien van de correctievolgorde bij het eindexamen was, voerde staatssecretaris Sander Dekker deze maatregel toch door. Er waren immers veel docenten die voor omkering. Hoeveel? 17 van de 39 deelnemers aan een pilot van de VO-raad om precies te zijn. Afgezien van dat het niet eens een meerderheid is, kun je bij dergelijke kleine aantallen onmogelijk spreken van een solide draagvlak. Niet gek dat inmiddels al ruim 3500 docenten een petitie tegen deze maatregel hebben getekend.

Given that the difficult and potentially triggering material we teach must not be abandoned because it’s timeless, provocative, germane, or simply canonical by accident of history—and given that a trigger warning can actually open up a discussion of material with which students have an initially low comfort level—we simply can’t dismiss student calls for trigger warnings. We have to take them seriously, not because literature (or life) needs a censor or students need to be coddled, but because being more acutely aware of how students are responding to challenging material is just better and more responsible pedagogy

The Harris-Chomsky exchange, in my mind, summarizes a lot of what I find unpleasant about [the skeptic and atheist movements]: a community who worships celebrities who are often intellectual dilettantes, or at the very least have a tendency to talk about things of which they manifestly know very little; an ugly undertone of in-your-face confrontation and I’m-smarter-than-you-because-I-agree-with [insert your favorite New Atheist or equivalent]; loud proclamations about following reason and evidence wherever they may lead, accompanied by a degree of groupthink and unwillingness to change one’s mind that is trumped only by religious fundamentalists; and, lately, a willingness to engage in public shaming and other vicious social networking practices any time someone says something that doesn’t fit our own opinions, all the while of course claiming to protect “free speech” at all costs.

Institutions like the World Bank and IMF view subsistence farming as an abnormality, they can’t understand it because if you’re not creating for the market you’d don’t exist in their world. Haiti is a very good example of that because agriculture was destroyed in the 1990s, when lots of heavily subsidised US rice was dumped in Haiti and many farmers had to leave the countryside and come into the cities and look for work in sweatshops. That’s a model that has been replicated from Mexico, post-NAFTA, to Tanzania. Haiti was informative because it was so emblematic of the system, but the same process happens all over the world. Haiti is what I call in the book a modern day slave state, and that is by design.
