In een poging om voor de Democraten zwevende kiezers te bemachtigen in republikeinse staten belde oud-president Clinton Kerry op. Hij drong er op aan dat Kerry zich daar moest uitspreken tegen het homo-huwelijk. Kerry antwoordde:
