Tom Waits/Cookie monster mashup
Tom Waits sometimes sounds eerily like Cookie Monster with his very dark, cynical voice. Here’s Cookie Monster’s rendition of Waits’ ‘God’s Away On Business.’

Over the centuries, the high seas have served as a blank canvas for cartographers’ worst nightmares. They have dotted the oceans with a whole crypto-zoo of island-sized whales, deathly seductive mermaids, giant sea serpents, and many more – a whole panoply of heraldic horrors.
As varied as this marine bestiary is, mapmakers have settled on a single, favourite species for land-based beastliness: the octopus.

Birds are very agile. They fly, not with rotating components, but by flapping their wings. Plenty of robots can fly – but none can fly like a real bird. That is, until Markus Fischer and his team at Festo built SmartBird, a large, lightweight robot, modeled on a seagull, that flies by flapping its wings. There’s a video where you can see the robot fly.

Glass Beach is a beach in MacKerricher State Park near Fort Bragg, California, USA, that is abundant in sea glass created from years of dumping garbage into an area of coastline near the northern part of the town. In the early 20th century, Fort Bragg residents threw their household garbage over the cliffs above what is now Glass Beach.
In 1967, the North Coast Water Quality Board and city leaders closed the area. Various cleanup programs were undertaken through the years to correct the damage. Over the next several decades the pounding waves cleansed the beach, wearing down the discarded glass into the small, smooth, colored trinkets that cover the beach today.

A funny game to measure how fast your reactions are. There are 5 sheep who want to leave the flock and run for freedom. Click the tranquilizer button whenever you see a sheep leaving. There’s a 3 second penalty if you shoot a dart when no sheep are running. My average raction time was 0.2544 seconds and I’m now called a ‘Bobbing bobcat.’

A 1960’s TV commercial for Hasbro’s Pie Face game that challenged children to hit themselves in the face with whipped-cream pies. Does anyone remember this game? I had never heard of it.

MS-DOS has turned 30 years old this week. Microsoft’s first desktop operating system was launched on July 27, 1981, after Microsoft bought the full rights to QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System), the PC operating system the company acquired from Seattle Computer Products.
During its life, several competing products were released for the x86 platform, and MS-DOS itself would go through eight versions, until development ceased in 2000. Ultimately it was the key product in Microsoft’s growth from a programming languages company to a diverse software development firm.

Below the sidewalks of London there is a remarkable network of tunnels and chambers, put in to place by Victorian engineers, the final step in a process which took centuries. For over a thousand years there had been a shipping dock at the mouth of the river – its name comes from the Anglo-Saxon fleot which means a tidal inlet. Yet it was not destined to persevere as a river in its own right.
