The Presurfer | Ancestor Stones

inca ruine

A British team of archaeologists on expedition in the Peruvian Andes has hailed as ‘sensational’ the discovery of some of the most sacred objects in the Inca civilisation – three ‘ancestor stones,’ which were once believed to form a precious link between the heavens and the underworld.

The find, which was made on an isolated Andean mountainside, provoked joy among local specialists and the experts present from, among others, the British Museum, Reading University and Royal Holloway, University of London. No examples of the ancestor stones were thought to have survived until now.

The Presurfer | Salt

zout

Salt. We use it almost everyday without even thinking about it, sprinkling it on fries, eggs, adding a pinch here an there to whatever we find to be a little bland. It is nearly ubiquitious and totally unrearkable. However, salt is a substance with both a rich history and a deep hidden beauty.

Beyond its gustatory and historical influence, salt has another important property: it can be absolutly beautiful. Occupying huge parts of our earth – both above and below ground – salt forms and creates some of the most beautiful landscapes on the planet.

The Presurfer | A star is born

Behind closed doors could lie the answer to safe renewable energy of the future. At the National Ignition Facility in Livermore, USA, scientists are aiming to build the world’s first sustainable fusion reactor by ‘creating a miniature star on Earth’.

The $3.5 billion project has inched a little closer to its goal of igniting a workable fusion reaction by 2012. On November 2 they fired up the 192 lasers beams at the centre of the reactor and aimed them at a glass target containing tritium and deuterium gas. The resulting release of energy was of a magnitude of 1.3 million mega joules, which was a world record and the peak radiation temperature measure at the core was approximately six million degrees Fahrenheit.
