The Presurfer | Open

The Open, by Mattia Casalegno, is a mask that wraps around your face and forces you to smell a fresh patch of grass and listen to your own breath. Equipped with fresh sod and headphones, this mask inhibit the visual system while enhancing the olfactory by the proximity with soil. The device defines also a sensory territory constructed by the rhytm of the breath, which is diffused from the headphones with a 1.5 sec. delay. The space defined by the sound of breathing is in a state of costant imbalance between the physical act and its sensory perception and traces an unstable relationship with the intimate environment the garment reproduces. Once television was the modern sensation that held our undivided attention for decades. Technology evolved and the first personal computers were released to public in 1977. Thereafter the World Wide Web was launched in 1990. Today there are over 2 billion internet users around the world.

Present day we can watch our favorite television episodes on the internet while connecting to our friends and family via social networks. We can also arrange dates online, play games online or converse with complete strangers in chat rooms or through private messages online. We are now all connected, but should we be?

Muralists and street artists bring gallery-worthy art to the streets where they can be enjoyed by all. Sometimes the murals are commissioned and sometimes they’re done guerrilla-style under cloak of night, but splashed across the surface of a bare concrete wall or the unadorned face of an abandoned building, they’re a welcome touch of color and character.

The Presurfer | Ancestor Stones

A British team of archaeologists on expedition in the Peruvian Andes has hailed as ‘sensational’ the discovery of some of the most sacred objects in the Inca civilisation – three ‘ancestor stones,’ which were once believed to form a precious link between the heavens and the underworld.

The find, which was made on an isolated Andean mountainside, provoked joy among local specialists and the experts present from, among others, the British Museum, Reading University and Royal Holloway, University of London. No examples of the ancestor stones were thought to have survived until now.

The Presurfer | Salt

Salt. We use it almost everyday without even thinking about it, sprinkling it on fries, eggs, adding a pinch here an there to whatever we find to be a little bland. It is nearly ubiquitious and totally unrearkable. However, salt is a substance with both a rich history and a deep hidden beauty.

Beyond its gustatory and historical influence, salt has another important property: it can be absolutly beautiful. Occupying huge parts of our earth – both above and below ground – salt forms and creates some of the most beautiful landscapes on the planet.

Dai Haifei, a 24-year-old architect from Beijing, China, found an ingenious solution to live rent-free. He built himself a mobile egg-shaped house that is powered by the sun. The 6-foot-high structure, which is small enough to fit on a sidewalk, is made of bamboo strips, wood chippings, sack bags, and grass seed that’s expected to grow in the spring.
