The Presurfer | The Laconia Incident

The Atlantic Ocean can be an unforgiving place at the best of times. During the Second World War, combatants on both sides were at peril both from the ocean and the enemy. On 12 September 1942, the British ship RMS Laconia, which was armed, was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat 156.

Yet that was not the end of the story. What unfolded was a tale of heroism and events both remarkable and ultimately truly unfortunate for many of those involved. The U-boat surfaced, its commander hoping to capture the senior crew of the ship. The horrified crew instead saw over 2000 people in the water. Then, the U-Boat commander Werner Hartenstein made an extraordinary decision that went beyond all protocol.

The Presurfer | Unusual locomotion

soort tractorUnusual Locomotion is a site about unusual off-road vehicles. Often, these vehicles will remain at the prototype stage because they are too eccentric, too expensive compared to the improvements, or too far ahead of their time.

Unusual Locomotion aims to summarize and share some more knowledge on the evolution of these vehicles and their techniques. It still includes documentation of classic 4×4, ‘unusual’ construction machinery and reports of visits of ‘old iron’ museums.

The Presurfer | Not doing much

international institute of not doing much

Don’t like to work under stress and pressure? Think life is rushing you and you want some more rests, relaxation, and recreation? Join the International Institute of Not Doing Much. Here’s their manifesto.

We shall not flag or fail. We shall slow down in the office, and on the roads. We shall slow down with growing confidence when all those around us are in a shrill state of hyperactivity. We shall defend our state of calm, whatever the cost may be. We shall slow down in the fields and in the streets, we shall slow down in the hills, we shall never surrender!

If you can slow down when all around you are speeding up, then you’re one of us. Be proud that you are one of us and not one of them. For they are fast, and we are slow. If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing slowly. Some are born to slowness – others have it thrust upon them. And still others know that lying in bed with a morning cup of tea is the supreme state for mankind.

The Presurfer | The Manslater

A lot of men say they don’t understand women. They have difficulties communicating with their partner. I’m not one of those men because I know what to do. I listen. In order to listen you need to pay attention. And you have to make eye contact. You will be surprised how well you remember what she tells you when you pay attention.

But for those who still think that men are from Mars and women are from Venus, there’s the Manslater, a device that tells them exactly what a woman means.

The Presurfer | Open

masker

The Open, by Mattia Casalegno, is a mask that wraps around your face and forces you to smell a fresh patch of grass and listen to your own breath.

Equipped with fresh sod and headphones, this mask inhibit the visual system while enhancing the olfactory by the proximity with soil. The device defines also a sensory territory constructed by the rhytm of the breath, which is diffused from the headphones with a 1.5 sec. delay.

The space defined by the sound of breathing is in a state of costant imbalance between the physical act and its sensory perception and traces an unstable relationship with the intimate environment the garment reproduces.

The Presurfer | Murals

muurschildering

Muralists and street artists bring gallery-worthy art to the streets where they can be enjoyed by all. Sometimes the murals are commissioned and sometimes they’re done guerrilla-style under cloak of night, but splashed across the surface of a bare concrete wall or the unadorned face of an abandoned building, they’re a welcome touch of color and character.
