Free Burma!

Today is the International Bloggers’ Day for Burma. On this day bloggers around the world are planning to refrain from posting to their blogs on October 4 and just put up one banner then, underlined with the words “Free Burma!” [wiki]. To set a sign for freedom and show our sympathy for these people who are fighting their cruel regime without weapons. Sargasso is supporting the International Bloggers’ Day for Burma. However because we are in the midst of our activities for the international Why Democracy campaign in which we are discussing improvements for our democracy, refraining from blogging is not an option for us. Nevertheless Sargasso has been closely following the developments in Burma and will assist Burmese bloggers where possible to spread their messages around the world. For a Free Burma!

History has shown that the Chinese are very good students; and they’ve learned a lesson or two from their political adversary, the United States. Whenever in recent history the UN Security Council wanted to initiate action (such as sanctions) to force Israel to adher to UN resolutions, the US put it down using it’s power of veto in the Council.

And so the Chinese are nowadays taking a page from the US foreign relations book and doing the very same thing with respect to Burma. The Burmese junta will prevail over the demonstrators because China is consistently blocking effective action to stop the junta – like China is consistently blocking moves to bring a proper end to the suffering in Sudan.

Yes, the Chinese are good students and the US have been excellent teachers…

Aside from that: does anyone really think the Chinese will agree to the world taking united action against what is essentially a mini-reprisal of what the Chinese dictatorship perpetrated against its own citizens in 1989?

Agreeing to that would for China mean that it in retrospect condemns its own actions of 1989. That will never happen.
