Maestro Luis Szarán laat met het ‘Landfill Harmonic’ orkest zien hoe je afval kunt transformeren tot onderwijsinstrument dat verschil maakt in het leven van mensen.
Vandaag aandacht voor een bijzonder project. In Paraguay leeft bijna 35 procent van de bevolking onder de armoedegrens. Maestro Luis Szarán is een man met een missie. In zijn vrije tijd trekt hij met zijn organisatie Sonidos de la Tierra door het land om muziekles te geven aan kinderen in de arme wijken. Szarán ziet muziek als instrument voor sociale transformatie. Maar hoe kom je aan een muziekinstrument als je nauwelijks geld hebt om te eten?
Szarán: ‘Despite living under dire circumstances, if a person has initiative and is creative, even trash can become an educational tool that could change someone’s life and the lives of others. (…) We believe we are conveying a dream when we play with the recycled instruments. Playing melodies made out of trash that move people’s hearts and turn the key that unlocks the deepest feelings in children and young kids that begin to re-evaluate their own lives in which they have it all.’
