De ophef die ontstond rondom een persbriefing van de Amerikaanse overheid wijt Silvio Berlusconi niet aan een overzees foutje (en uiteraard al helemaal niet aan zichzelf), maar aan de Italiaanse aard om zichzelf te kastijden en zich van haar slechte kant te laten zien. Het Witte Huis had voor de pers, die met Dubya meereist naar de G8, geciteerd uit de ‘Encyclopedia of World Biography’. Gisteren bood de woordvoerder van het Witte Huis excuses aan voor het stukje over Berlusconi, dat luidde: “one of the most controversial leaders in the history of a country known for governmental corruption and vice … regarded by many as a political dilettante who gained his high office only through use of his considerable influence on the national media until he was forced out of office in 2006.” Wat er doordringt vanuit de ‘reality based-community’ in het Bush kamp, houdt niet lang stand.
Op het Piazza Navona in Rome spraken duizenden demonstranten zich gisteren uit tegen de wetten die Berlusconi op maat laat maken om immuniteit te krijgen tegen juridische procedures die tegen hem lopen. Aanhangers van Silvio vinden dat het noodzakelijke acties zijn om te kunnen blijven functioneren met al die, volgens hen politieke, aanklachten. Maar volgens critici misbruikt de president de democratie. Die critici snappen er natuurlijk niets van, want Berlusconi heeft zelf een eigen goddelijke democratie uitgevonden:
“Berlusconi favors the kind of democracy in which the supreme leader is anointed by the electorate every several years, and faithfully interprets what he sees as the popular will. He once said that “there is something divine in having been chosen by the people” and this causes him to regard the checks and balances of democratic practice—rule of law, parliamentary votes, and commissions of inquiry—as annoying encumbrances. At one point, Berlusconi announced that because polls (taken by his own polling company) showed that most Italians did not consider the acts of which he was accused to be crimes, they were not, in fact, crimes. If he were to be convicted, he has said, it would ipso facto prove that Italy was not a democracy.”

Nou, de rest van die uitspraken doen helemaaaal denken aan die grote kleine man.
Moet trouwens een lekker clubje samen zijn die G*: Putinpuppet Medvedev, Sharkozy, Dubya, “amigo” Berlusconi en dan nog een paar lichtgewichten die met die jongens meebuigen.
Wel jammer, volgens mij was hij accuraat gelabeld.
Liever een arrogante kwast die goed is voor de economie dan een verdwaasde idioot als Prodi die economische ondergang als ideaal heeft.
Ik vind het vooral ironisch dat de Bush-administration in eerste instantie een kwalificatie als deze over een ander poneert:

Niet verwonderlijk dat dit de excuses zijn, dan:
