Dat komt uit ‘American History X’. Je ziet dit vaker: films waarvan van de makers geloven dat een een bepaalde boodschap in de ene richting hebben (bijv. anti-racisme, of anti-oorlog, of anti-kapitalisme, of anti-geweld, etc.) in feite worden aangegrepen als inspiratie voor het omgekeerde. Gangstertjes die Boys in tha Hood of Scarface nadoen, mensen die het leger in willen omdat ze Platoon of Apocalypse Now! hebben gezien, skinheads die Derek uit American History X willen zijn, etc.
De bedoelde boodschap van een cultuuruiting is dan ook niet zoveel van belang, want die heeft geen effect. Als je werkelijk een anti-ditofdatfilm wilt maken, dan moet je je afvragen welke sentimenten kijkers eraan zullen overhouden, welke personages ze het stoerst zullen vinden en stiekem zouden willen zijn, etc.
‘Nanking’ is een echte anti-oorlogsfilm, ‘Apocalypse Now!’ is alleen heel goed.
