“1809-1810 Mientras llega el día” ~ “1809-1810 Before Dawn” | It was there, on August 10, 1809 that the first call for independence from Spain was made in Latin America (“Primer Grito de la Independencia”), Quito’s nickname, “Luz de América” (“Light of America”) comes from the inspiration that this first attempt produced in the rest of Spanish America, creating a domino effect that would ultimately lead to the expulsion of Spain from the continent. However, this initial movement was ultimately defeated on August 2, 1810, when Spanish forces came from Lima, Peru, and killed the leaders of the uprising along with about 200 inhabitants of the city.
