My taxi-driver already told me earlier today – when Sarkozy wins France again will see massive riots. “How do you know”, I ask him. “Trust me, I know…”, he said – and somehow he made me believe him. When you’re driving around Paris at a 130 km/h for over 13 years, you might just know.
‘34’ was the number buzzing around the France24 HQ, long before the victory of ‘Sarko’ was made public. Riots in France are measured in the amount of burned down cars, and when even on the day before the elections that number is 34, it seems something to be worried about. But who would dare to broadcast that? Only when riots are made known to the public they get their effect. Otherwise a burned down car is merely an incident. So how big is the influence of television with regards to civil unrest?
Now the first images of uprooted youth are on CNN. On Place de la Bastille police uses tear gas against protesters. Even now on France24 we see the first images of riots. ‘Jusqu’ici tout va bien’

Somehow, this is all speculation. Making a big deal out of things. I hope there will be a détente after the emotions have worn off, and that Sarkozy will have the good sense to organise his Elysée towards bigger goals, while he leaves public order to the new minister of the interior. Meanwhile, my focus is slowly shifting towards Arsenal v Chelsea, BBC 2, 23:30 ;-)

We weren’t asked to speak/write in french (although Olaf speaks french fluently). We were asked to contribute to the english channel of France24 (the station broadcasts in english, french and arabic). If our blogger Youssef would be around we also could have sent a arabic speaking blogger. The french channel was covered by native speakers: bloggers from France.

These youths ought to be cheeering for Sarkozy. He is the only candidate who will make some economic reforms possible that allow for some social mobility.
They want jobs, jobs they are underqualified for – but no employer in his right mind would hire them: if one does, it is nearly impossible to fire an employee if his work is below standard.

De taxi chauffeur vannacht vertelde dat het uiteindelijk wel meeviel in Parijs. Eigenlijk niet veel meer dan je vaker hebt in Frankrijk als er iets bijzonders gaande is.

Misschien omdat het (bijna) niet erger was dan normaal?

Maar dat dit met opzet niet in het nieuws gekomen is om vooral geen aanzet te laten zijn voor extra onrust op de verkiezingsdag.

Het lijkt op het dilemma van de media bij een gezinsmoord, als er weer een vader met z’n kinderen voor de trein springt. Uit angst voor copycats wordt dit dan niet breeduit gemeten.
Van de andere kant gaat het wel om de gevolgen van conservatieve Sarkozy-regeringen. In feite worden hier negatieve beleidsresultaten gecensureerd…

@24: Duh, toen was Sarkozy nog minister van Binnenlandse zaken, die draagt de politie op om zo positief mogelijk te zijn. Mij maak je niet wijs dat het normaal is dat er op een nacht honderd auto’s de fik in gaan.
