Eén op de vier Amerikaanse kinderen en één op de acht van alle Amerikanen is nu afhankelijk van voedselbonnen. ‘It’s time for us to face up to the fact that in this country of plenty, there are hungry people,’ zegt een overheidsfunctionaris.
Dat van de voedselbonnengebruikers 28 procent zwart is, 15 procent latino en 8 procent blank is niet het opvallende nieuws. Het is een traditionele verdeling waarbij opvalt dat het voedselbonnengebruik onder blanken relatief hard aan het stijgen is. ‘This is the first recession in which a majority of the poor in metropolitan areas live in the suburbs.’
En: ‘The richest counties are often where aid is growing fastest, although from a small base. In 2007, Forsyth County, outside Atlanta, had the highest household income in the South. (One author dubbed it “Whitopia.”) Food stamp use there has more than doubled.’
Wat de lezers van de New York Times het meeste opvalt is dat het voedselbonnengebruik het meeste is gestegen in Republikeinse counties. Inderdaad lijkt dit laatste feit nog niet echt goed doorgedrongen tot de nieuwsmedia. Als de werkloosheid aanhoudt zullen de Republikeinen een harde dobber hebben om bij de verkiezingen van 2010 hun counties vast te houden.
